Connected to Internet but Browsers Don't Work

Hello,

I own a Toshiba Satellite L505 with Windows 7 as the operating system. The problem I'm having is that although I'm quite sure I have a strong internet connection, not one of my browsers (i.e. Firefox 4, Google Chrome, or IE) are able to go to load any online addresses. I'm connected to the internet via wires through a router using a cable modem. I've looked at other forums for help, but following their advice hasn't gotten me any substantial results so far.

Additionally I've performed the ping tests with my ip address, my default gateway, my dns server, 8.8.8.8 and yahoo.com with all for packages with 4 sent and received. If there is any advice you have feel free to post it here, I really have no where else to go besides the local Best Buy's Geek Squad.

Looking at your ipconfig and from your ping test, you do have connectivity. The problem is that something is preventing your browsers from working.

Check your firewall. Try turning it off for just a test.

Check your hosts file. It's located at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc. Open it with Notepad and it should look something like:

127.0.0.1 localhost

All those lines with # are just comments.

If there is anything after 127.0.0.1 localhost, that you didn't put in, then you may have a malware issue.

kinda going out on a hint here, but are your browsers in offline mode?

I have somewhat of a similar problem that may or may not be caused by the same thing.

I posted in this thread http://www.GeekPolice.net/t27954-win-7-can-t-connect-to-public-wifi about how another site mentions that it may be interference from your AV. Coincidence or not, I also have a Toshiba brand netbook.

Since my problem is with public wifi (home wifi seems to work just fine) I can"t test to see if a physical connection will work, but besides that our problems do seem similar.

localhost does not exist in windows 7 :-

Try changing your routers dns to a public dns addressor use direct dns for your ISP instead of the 192.168 option
