I became aware of some irratic behaviour on may PC today.
Noticeable symptoms:
  1. Clicking on links from a Google search resulted in new windows opening with Adverts or unexpected sites appearing rather than the expected destination pages. This happened in both Internet Explorer and Firefox (most of the time but not every time).
  2. Also I noticed that audio adverts played unexpectedly and without any obvious application running that was playing them (according to Windows task manager)

I ran a scan with 'Ad-aware' which found Win32rootkit.tdss. I selected to remove this but a re-boot was required to complete the removal. The resultant rebot seemed to make no difference. After a second attempt to scan & re-boot the result was the same.

I then found some advice in forums to run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. After a slow load, the software would not run, or rather ran with no obvious signs of life. I again gleened form forums that some trojans prevent mbam.exe from running so I tried renaming this file as they suggested, but again to no effect.

This is the log for my run of HijackThis:

Hello.
We can kill this with ease, but it takes alittle while.
Once this has run, your problem might appear gone becuase the rootkit will be disabled, but the malware will still be present, so don't think it's gone just because everything seems back to normal.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: HERE or HERE.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Leave the script box empty.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
3. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Thanks for the swift reply (and reassuring words!)

When I selected all of the above and pressed 'Remove selected infections' I got the message "Specified file was not found." multiple times.

Hello.
I should have mentioned AVG will go crazy now the rootkit is uncovered and disabled. Tell AVG to quarantine them if you want to, because were gonna use a more effective scanner anyway.

First though, lets bin the rootkit file and the hidden driver.

2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Drivers to delete:
UACd.sys

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\UACyrjgehyi.sys

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.

4. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Okay, lets go with MBAM and see what it picks up.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
  • Double click DDS.scr to run
  • When complete, DDS.txt will open.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.

I see you are in the UK too, Belahzur. So I guess that it's time for both of us to head up the wooden hill to Bedfordshire. I'm sure the rest can keep for another day. Thanks for all your help so far and for make the problem in my world your priority.

No, I'm watching Destination X tonight. 😉

I see you have used OTMoveIt in the past, please do not use tools like OTMoveIt if you aren't trained and don't know how to work it, otherwise serious damage may occur.

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.

  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :files
    c:\windows\system32\uactmp.db
    c:\windows\system32\UAClonlskoa.db

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste instructions for items to be Moved" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
    [
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

How's the machine now?

I think it's looking good. And I feel a lot better about it. I'm not sure where we picked up that little wretch from, but there are members of my family that will click on anything without reading it! (It's always tempting to run the 'blame allocation suite')

Anyway, I really am off to bed now.

Thanks a heap for everything!

Hello.
Okay, power down the machine and leave it off so no more malware downloads onto it.
I have the day off tomorrow, so I can be online when you post back. Smile...

1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.
The link can be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin

Ok, I'll sign off now. I'll implement the advice above. But thanks for everything, Belahzur. You're a real star. You got me out of a real spot. Cheers.
