How to Repair Windows Movie Maker and Windows Media Player Issues
This guide will work for Windows 8, 8.1 and Windows 10, few of the troubleshooting steps will work with previous Windows operating systems.
If Windows Movie Maker and Windows Media Player crashes, gives errors or does not open at all then follow the below troubleshooting steps.
Step 1
Open the Command Prompt by clicking Start Menu --> All Programs --> Accessories, right-click on Command Prompt, and open it as an administrator. In Windows Vista and later versions of Window operating systems type cmd.exe into Start Screen or Start Menu, right-click on Cmd.exe, and open it as an administrator.
Execute Sfc command at the Command Prompt.
You would use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) tool to fix Windows 8, 8.1 and Windows 10 component store corruptions, when the Sfc command failed to repair corrupted or missing Windows system files.
The Sfc command should be able to repair the Windows system files afterwards. Execute below command to make sure corrupted system files repaired.
If the issue failed to resolve then follow the instructions at Step 2.

Uninstall and reinstall Windows Media Player.
At this point hopefully your problem should be solved.
If issue failed to resolve then follow Step 3 instructions.
Step 3
If issue still failed to resolve then follow instructions at Step 4.

You can use the Event Viewer to check for errors and warning logs to see if there are any clues to what is causing the issue with Windows Media Player and Windows Movie Maker.
You can try to repair install Windows Essentials apps which includes Windows Movie Maker.
1. Press keys and type wlarp into opened Run dialog box and click OK button.
2. At opened Uninstall or Repair Windows Essentials Programs tool, select "Repair all Windows Essentials programs".
How to Troubleshoot Windows Errors Using Event Viewer
Hopefully this will resolve the issue with the Windows Movie Maker, if not then uninstall Windows Movie Maker or all Windows Essentials apps from Uninstall or Repair Windows Essentials Programs tool and then reinstall Windows Essentials apps.

- Turn Windows Media Player Back on, head back into Windows Features on or off, and check the box again.
At this point hopefully your problem should be solved.

- Uninstall all installed third party codecs pack.
- Open Control Panel --> Troubleshooting --> Programs and use the Windows Media Player troubleshooting tool.
If issue still failed to resolve then follow instructions at Step 4.
Step 4
