I'm having a problem with Windows XP locking up and auto restarting. This only occurs when I'm watching movies off the HD or on NetFlix. The system is completely clean of viruses and malware, this is something that has started in the last 4 or 5 weeks. I can't figure it out! If I'm on the internet or doing other work it runs beautifully no problems but as soon as I start to watch a movie, it may run great for an hour and either lock up or restart on its own. I can be on netflix and watch it for 2 hours and no problem and then the next day it may lock up or restart 4-6 times. Im STUMPED :-/

when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply.

As I suspected, the problem is with the video card. Go to the DirectX website and try to update the driver.

descriptionWindows XP HELP! EmptyRe: Windows XP HELP!

Okay I'll give it a go. I just updated the directx driver although I checked and I had the 9.0c driver but I reinstalled incase it got corrupted somehow and I went ahead and updatated the ati graphics card driver as well. See if that cleans it up.

Well, crap....just went to Netflix to try it out. Got about 3 min into the show and it froze. It's not a blue screen freeze though. It's like the picture completely freezes and you can't do anything. The mouse won't move and there is a humming sound that comes through the speakers. And you have to hit the restart button. I'll try again but it appears for the moment it's still doing the same thing.

descriptionWindows XP HELP! EmptyRe: Windows XP HELP!

Does it do that in Safe Mode? Check your Device Manager and see if there are any yellow warning icons.

Haven't tried in safe mode, doesn't the wifi get turned off in safe mode though? And no hardware issues in the device manager

We won't know until we try. If wifi is turned off, try watching a movie from you hard drive.

So sorry I've been so busy at work I'm just getting back to this. I'm letting a movie play in safe mode now. It's 22 minutes in and it hasn't locked up. I'll let it play a bit longer but if it plays through and now lock up any idea what it could be when not in safe mode?

descriptionWindows XP HELP! EmptyRe: Windows XP HELP!

more_horiz
Safe mode uses less resources. In Normal Mode, something is eating up the resources.
Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Attach the file to your next reply.

Did it play the whole movie in Safe Mode? What happens when you play a movie you have save on your computer in Normal Mode?

descriptionWindows XP HELP! EmptyRe: Windows XP HELP!

Well it played for 45 min and didn't freeze in safe mode. Then I rebooted and watched the whole movie 2hr 25min in normal mode and it didn't freeze. Strange....haven't tried Netflix yet...

That happens when you're streaming a movie. Does it do it when you watch a movie that is already on your computer?

descriptionWindows XP HELP! EmptyRe: Windows XP HELP!

It has only done it once or twice when I'm watching off my HD. Last night while watching Netflix it did it 3 time in like 4 hours but last week it froze 5 times in 20 minutes. Seems to do it once in a blue moon when watching off the HD.

No, just check to see if any are flaming. You can check the website of your computer to see the normal operating temps.

Temp 2 is 2* - 4* Higher than the suggested temp. Not sure what temp 2 is measuring

I'm stumped. It's not overheating so I can't figure this out unless I'm sitting in front of the computer which is impossible. Does it still freeze and restart or just freezes?

descriptionWindows XP HELP! EmptyRe: Windows XP HELP!

As long as I'm watching off the HD it seems to not do either. I'm going to reinstall the silver light plugin for Netflix and see if there is an issue with that....if not...I'm in the same boat as you, I'll also watch the temps and see if the spike when on netflix

descriptionWindows XP HELP! EmptyRe: Windows XP HELP!

Dave,

I figured out the problem. It was the power supply. It was going out and the system was getting a voltage drop. It crapped out 3 days ago and since I have replaced it, it's ran flawless and cooler too....14 degrees at that. I'd have never thought to check voltage.

descriptionWindows XP HELP! EmptyRe: Windows XP HELP!

more_horiz
That is good news. Who would have thought about checking that.

descriptionWindows XP HELP! EmptyRe: Windows XP HELP!

more_horiz
Well...in the future if you exhaust all options and still can't figure out why a pc is restarting and freezing for no reason you can tell the next guy to bust out the volt meter! Lol

Honestly I'd have never thought to check voltage, it makes perfect since now...but I'd have sworn it was a software issue way before I'd have thought to check voltage. Not one freeze or restart in 5 days and runs between 94 to 101 degrees.
