The Problem: I was on my computer the other day and out of no where it turned off. When I turned it back on I was able to log back in. After a brief amount of time a blue screen with white text popped up. This was the blue screen of death. Before I could finish reading all of the text my computer again shut off and restarted.

After conferring with a tech savy friend it seems that the problem is not hardware based but is more likely some sort of virus mimicking a system crash.

I have attempted to recover my computer. However, it still crashed after the recovery process was over.

I have also attempted numerous virus/malware detection software.

I have used:
-Microsoft Security Scanner
-AVG AntiVirus Free 2013 Scan
-Malwarebytes Malware Scan

All have returned results of no viruses detected.

Please help me with this issue. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to GeekPolice.Net My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.
1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

Almost all BSOD's are caused by a software/hardware problem, not malware. Other than this problem has anything been changed on your computer lately?
Download BlueScreenView to your desktop.
BlueScreenView
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply.

I have attached the following text from the Blue Screen Report.

As far as new changes to my computer the only thing I had done was download Microsoft Office maybe one or two weeks prior to the incident.

My friend who works for Geek Squad at Best Buy looked over my computer and said the hardware looked in good shape. He thinks that it is a virus that is imitating the BSOD. I just thought this information might help you out  a little.

My friend who works for Geek Squad at Best Buy looked over my computer and said the hardware looked in good shape. He thinks that it is a virus that is imitating the BSOD.

You can't just look at something and say it's ok. Tests have to be run on different components. Malware doesn't really act like that. It either locks your computer and demands money to unlock it or it stays hidden so it can gain information from your computer and your computing habits.
Please run this even if you don't have the OS disk and tell me what happens.

To Run the SFC /SCANNOW Command in Windows 7
1. Open an elevated command prompt.
2. To Scan and Repair System Files
NOTE: Scans the integrity of all protected system files and repairs the system files if needed.
A) In the elevated command prompt, type sfc /scannow and press Enter. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: This may take some time to finish.
Blue Screen of Death 2327d1231529432t-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker-command-1
B) Go to step 4.
3. To Only Verify if the System Files are Corrupted
NOTE: Scans and only verifies the integrity of all proteced system files only.
A) In the elevated command prompt, type sfc /verifyonly and press Enter.
4. When the scan is complete, hopefully you will see all is ok like the screenshot below.
NOTE: If not, then you can attempt to run a System Restore using a restore point dated before the bad file occured to fix it. You may need to repeat doing a System Restore until you find a older restore point that may work.
Blue Screen of Death 2328d1231529438t-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker-finished
5. When done, close the elevated command prompt.

Ok, we'll have to try something drastic to isolate the problem. Please follow the instructions closely.
We are going to be using a Windows Recovery Environment to help disinfect the system so it may boot again.
Download the OTLPE Standard REATOGO Windows Recovery Environment.

  • Place a blank CD-R disc in to your CD burning drive.
  • Download OTLPEStd.exe and double-click on it to burn to a CD using an ISO Burner. One can be found here.
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
  • Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start. Change the following settings
  • Change Drivers to Non-Microsoft
  • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved  in drive C:\_OTL\MovedFiles
  • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
  • Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.

If I can access the internet via safe mode do I still have to follow throught with the CD burning process?

Also I should mention that I have already been able to restore my system to a previous date however that did not fix the problem. I don't know if this changes anything I just thought I should mention it.

Well, that's better news. Please download and run MBAM in Safe Mode with NetWorking. If it runs successfully, try running it in Normal mode.
Blue Screen of Death Mbamicontw5 Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from here.
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

I was able to run the Malware scan in safe mode. However, I am unable to run the scan in normal mode as the blue screen pops up shortly after I log in.

Here are the results from the scan.

Do you hear any beeps when your computer boots?
We Need to Diagnose Your BlueScreen
1.When you boot your machine, press F8 to list the startup options, exactly as you would if you were trying to enter Safe Mode
2.Select "Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure", as shown here:
Blue Screen of Death Disableautomaticrestart

3.When your system BSODs, write down the STOP error code, as well as any written out error message back here. The STOP error will always appear, but the message may not. You are looking for this:

I  have not noticed any unusual beeping.

I did not get an error message but the code is as follows.

STOP:  0x0000001E  (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005,  0xFFFFFA800696610,  0x0000000000000000, 0x000007FFFFFA8000)

Do you have the OS disk for that computer? If not, is there a Recovery partition installed?

descriptionBlue Screen of Death EmptyRe: Blue Screen of Death

Could you explain to me what each of those are?

OS is your Windows 7 disk and to find if you have the Recovery partition left-click on My Computer and it will list the drives. The C drive would be your main drive where Windows 7 is installed and if there is a recovery partition you will probably find it on the D drive. If you didn't receive the Win7 disk when you purchased your computer there is very likely a Recovery partition.

I could not find the recovery partition. The D Drive told me to insert a CD to access it.

As far as the OS disc I have a disc that came with my computer it is called Drivers and Utilities.  Not sure if that is the same thing. Other than that I will have to wait till I go home in another week to determine whether I have the disc or not.

Ok, it would appear that you don't have a Recovery Partition. The disk you found would not be the correct disk. I've never seen a Windows 7 OS disk but if it's anything like XP you can't mistake it. I suspect that a bad driver is causing your problem and we'll need the OS disk to replace the ntoskrnl.exe file  which is critical in your boot up. If you can't find the OS disk, perhaps you can borrow one but it must be the exact same model that's installed on your computer.

It seems I am unable to find a copy of the OS disk either. I never received one when I purchased my computer. Do I have any further options? I am most likely just going to send the computer in for repairs.

Here are the reasons why the NTOSKRNL.EXE is causing a blue screen. You can check these out, if you wish.

I talked with Dell Tech support and they are sending me the OS Disk. So it seems that I will be able to reinstall Windows 7 after all.

Well, that is good new. Below, please find a list of free AV programs. Please install one after you get your computer running and make sure you turn on Windows Defender to protect yourself. I recommend MicroSoft Security Essentials.

Remember to only install one antivirus!

1) Avast! Home Edition
2) AVG Free Edition
3) Avira AntiVir Personal
4) MicroSoft Security Essentials All versions and all languages.
5) Comodo Antivirus (Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage" if you choose this one)
6) PC Tools AntiVirus Free Edition

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

When I receive my OS disk is there any special steps I have to follow when I put it in my computer or is it all pretty much self-explanatory?

I reinstalled that OS disk. Now I have to reinstall all the drivers and get my laptop back to what it was before the reinstall. How to I go about making sure everything is back to the way it was?

I was going to suggest to do a repair only but now that you re-installed the OS please tell me how the computer is functioning.

Well when I contacted Dell for the disc they instructed me to reinstall. As far as I can tell everything is running properly. Now I just need to reinstall all my programs. How do I go about ensuring that all my drivers and everything is up to date?

If it's working fine then there's no need to do anything with the drivers. Re-install your programs and you're good to go.
