Hey.

I just got an old Toshiba Tecra 9100 mailed to me from a friend. Today I installed Ubuntu and Windows XP on it, and it was working fine. This evening, however, I was playing Minesweeper on Ubuntu, closed the laptop to take a sip of water, and when I opened it again, the screen was black with a blinking white underscore in the top left. So, I restarted the computer using the power button, and ever since then I've been getting the same error (see title).

After a half hour of looking around, I fear I might have picked up a virus which has overwritten my BIOS. Is that possible? If so, how likely is it, and if/how is it fixed? What other possibilities are there? Maybe I closed the laptop to hard, or leaned on it? Basically, I'd just like to know what could have caused this, and if/how I can fix it.

Thanks for your time
- F0lak

Edit: It's probably worth mentioning that the CD/DVD drive is not registering at all, and I can't even get into CMOS.

Hi,
This is not software problem. You have damaged hardware, BIOS chip probably. I suggest you to visit some of near PC Show or use ebay, etc to find BIOS replacement for your Toshiba. It was probably damaged in transporting or something else. You can not fix this problem alone. There is option to remove BIOS chip from motherboard and plug in new one, clean, and it should work. You just need to visit some technology shop or computer service in your town.
