media player won't work

New hp printer wouldn't install & Hp support installed it after 2 hours of remote access to my computer. Printer runs great but now media player won't work...no dvd or cd... message states can't open file. I'm not very computer savvy so i'm looking for simple language. I know hp changed reg. keys and did not change them back....and if Rage XL is part of media player working...the device manager area states "this device cannot start. So need to know what to put back the way it was...afraid to do restore system...afraid i'll unins

Hi,

Do the following so we can see if there's any problem with your audio:

• Open Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Device Manager
  
• There on the audio, check if there is any yellow exclamation mark
  
• If you find any, try taking a screen or letting us now.

Thanks for help...couldn't find audio but did find 3 exclamation points...1. Rage XL "Device cannot start (code 10) 2. AMD 8151 Hyper Transport AGP3 Graphics Tunnel "can't load drivers required" 3. Multi card "Device cannot start".

Go where you found the exclamation marks and press Print Screen. It can be found in the same line as F11,F12, etc... Then open the Paint and press paste(either by right click or manually)and save the image.
Go on imageshack.us and upload your image there. It will give you a forum code, copy it and paste it here so I can see where you have these exclamation marks.

And I don't have audio...

It seems that you miss many drivers.
So:

• For your graphics: press HEREenter your model, which is Rage XL and download the drivers from there.
  
• For your multi card you can take a look HERE or look on google
  
• You have audio. It's the "Sound, video and game controllers". Press the + there and tell me if you got any yellow exclamation marks.

There are no exclamations marks under sound...
I went to site for driver and encountered problem....when I entered RageXL then went to question what operating sys...they don't show Vista....they don't seem to have Rage or it is not available any longer...not sure.....so I would need to know what I can download that would be compatible. I couldn't seem to find any info about this on their site.....Am I missing something? Is there another site I can go to? I'll wait to hear from you and yes I'm a woman. Thanks so much for all you've done so far.

I have found a site...www.nodevice.com that does have a Rage XL but it says it is for WinXP and of course I have Vista. I have been surfing and found some sites that might be saying the Rage has been discontinued but they're pretty technical so I'm not sure.

OK I've found Rage XL to download on CNET.com. Should I uninstall the one that is on my computer before I download?

Yes do that and then restart.
Seems that your sound drivers are ok, so as you said, HP support corrupted some files.
What system type are you running? 64 or 32 bit?
If you don't know how to find it out:
Go Start>Run>Type "msinfo32" (without the quotes)>System Type

Tell me what it shows on system type. If it shows x86, your system is x32 bit.

Windows media is essential for the pc to run. Even if someone doesn't use it, he/she should not uninstall it!

I,m running 64 bit. Question...If Hp gave commands to change or disable files, even if I install new cards/drivers, won't the same commands that were changed be in the computer? and if so will the new downloads work?

I think that your printer is not compatible with your OS. That's why HP support changed the registry.
To answer your question I need to know why you could not install the printer yourself. Did it give you any errors?

It's the same printer I installed 3 years ago...the tech said Hp was having problems with the install software and I 've been reading that this is not an uncommon problem....I would go thru the install process and it would freeze at around 96% completion rate...I did this for about 4 hours before I contacted HP...the tech spent another 2 hours on my computer.

Are you sure that the printer's cd doesn't have any problems? Have you tried to use another one?

For your windows media, download these codecs.

I changed the codecs as the previous ones, were for win xp only

Codecs says for Win XP Os...will it be Ok for Vista? Yes I did use the other one and that is when printer was installed but after Hp Tech had been in the computer.

I edited the post, download again the codecs. If that doesn't work either, I would suggest you either to restore and try to install the printer back again with a new cd or use another program for your audio. You choose

You mean the Windows Media Player? If yes, have you tried uninstalling it reinstalling it again?

Click the Start button , click Control Panel, click Programs & Features, and then click Turn Windows features on or off. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Browse to Media Features and click the plus sign to reveal the sub-folders. Uncheck Windows Media Player, reboot.

Browse to the same location again and check the Windows Media Player option to reinstall it.

Hello Enzio...I went to on/off pg of programs and features...I couldn't find any media features..or are they called something else?

Just look for windows media player. It should be there, maybe under any different name.

Not there...anyhow I did a systems restore...of course the printer is uninstalled but still have exclamation point on Rage XL & AMD 8151 AGP3 Graphics tunnel. Multi Card is now ok....so does anyone have any more ideas other than me throwing the computer out the window? BUT I do now have video and sound...so what's up with Rage and AMD what do they do?
