Browsing and Chat issues

Hello, I may be in the wrong forum so feel free to redirect me.

Recently I have been having trouble entering chatrooms that use flash and java(?) It may be an issue on the site I go on, but mainly I think it is my browser. When I try to type, certain actions do not take place-- such as when I type macros(?) for italics < i > or :thumbnail: images.

I have also had problems with half loaded pages and continuous load screens.

I use the recent versions of flash, java, and mozilla firefox. I can provide more detail if needed, any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
