Hello. My computer has become infected with the Win32/Cryptor virus. From reading loads of posts on many forums, I have assumed my first step in getting help for this is to run Hijack This and post the logfile. Thanks in advance, your help is greatly appreciated!

Hello.
Two things to do here.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • When Hijack This opens, click "Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Then select "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on "Save List..." (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: HERE or HERE.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

Note: This tool was posted specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

2. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Leave the script box empty.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
3. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply, along with the uninstall list log.

Use more than one post if needed.

Hello.
You are running two antivirus', I see from the uninstall list you have Norton/Symantec installed, along with AVG. This is a bad idea as they can conflict and cause more problems. I would recommend that you remove Symantec to avoid conflict and other future problems.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs.

  • Adobe Reader 7.0.5
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
  • Java(TM) 6 Update 12
  • Java(TM) 6 Update 4
  • Java(TM) 6 Update 7
  • LiveUpdate Notice (Symantec Corporation)
  • Norton Security Scan
  • Norton Security Scan (Symantec Corporation)
  • WildTangent Web Driver

Please read here for more information about WildTangent. Your choice if you want to remove it or not.

Now we can carry on with our removal.

1. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Drivers to delete:
UACd.sys

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\UACueusckjcplcxhqo.sys

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

2. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.

3. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Since you already have MBAM (Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) on the system, I want to use that.

  • Open MBAM and go into the "Update" tab. Press the "Check for updates" button to get the latest database.
  • Once the update is done, go back into the "Scanner" tab, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

Hello.
Just to ask, do you know what these folders are?

c:\program files\tool
c:\program files\step2

Do they contain the tools we used? if so, delete them. The avenger/OTMoveIt are exetremely powerfull, they can and will seriously damage your machine if used incorrectly.

We can remove OTMoveIt now.

  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it again.
  • Press the green CleanUp! button.
  • Press Yes cleanup process prompt, do the same for the reboot prompt.
How is the machine running now?

Those 2 folders were earlier attempts to install SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes under different names, as per someone elses instructions. The installs hung up, so I didn't even realize those folders were there, but they and their contents have been deleted.

I did as you instructed, with the Cleanup! on OTMoveIt3.exe and the computer did prompt for reboot. During the reboot, it got as far as the Windows logo screen, but then went blank and seemed to stop responding. I waited about 10 minutes to see if it would eventually come up, which it did not, and then manually rebooted with the power button. The system finally restarted after 4 attempts, and appears to be semi-okay (no more wacky keyboard, IE working properly, no random freezing *so far*), but what do you think about the startup issue?

Thanks again for all your help!

ETA:
The "startup issue" described above is the same one I mentioned earlier when my computer was infected with Win32/Cryptor

There's a hell of a lot of stuff running at startup that doesn't need to be, it's doing nothing but wasting your systems resources.

We'll stop some of these, post a fresh Hijack This log.

Thanks again.. I'm definitely making a donation here, you've already saved me lots of money by not having to take the machine in for repair. I was afraid I was going to have to reformat

Same thing basically, hanging during start up. It did come up one time, but then immediately froze. Still trying.....

Yes I was still having the problems after the Hijack This fix. I've not had any luck getting it to restart. Had enough of it for one day, will try again tomorrow.

So I get up this morning, and my computer seems to have finally started itself up. My AVG Resident Shield alert is up and shows that it's still infected with Win32/Cryptor... I don't know what the hell is up with this machine!

Hello.
Can you attempt to open/run MBAM again please.

If it wont run/open, then you got infected again.

Hi.
Yes, it did open, and I am now running a scan. It seems to be working so far.

It said there were no infections, and I was able to remove what was in AVG's Virus Vault (which was not possible initially)... But now it's not wanting to restart again.
