Hello,

I have a virus Win32/Cryptor. I use AVG and it states this in the Web Shield Finding 3 times:

"Virus identified Win32/Cryptor";"Malicious link removed";"";"2/23/2009, 2:08:24 PM";"File";"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

I cannot open certain websites on a server I have the domains on, www.autographarcade.com, www.nrwd.org, www.urmtsonmensclub.org and www.ark-interior.com. You can view the websites on any other computer besides my network. I have 3 computers on it. My mine one in my office upstairs which has everything attached to i.e. route etc. The other one in the office is very old and hasn't been switch on for about 2 months and the one I am using now my laptop down stairs. The laptop has the virus on it and it seems to have blocked the IP addresses on the other machines or something the main one doesn't have the files on it so I would think it hasn't got the virus.

I have download and updated everything you state on your "Read Before Posting" page. Except JavaRa it stated:

"JavaRa encounted a problem and need to close" which it did and I have tried it again and it does the same thing. Also while I was downloading the updates the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop has gone.

Here is the HijackThis file:

Hello.

I see you have Viewpoint Manager, this is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". Read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

Additional info: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_137262.htm

I suggest you remove the program now.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

Hello Belahzur,

Thanks for your help.

In the add/remove programs there is only Viewpoint Toolbar which I have deleted. Other others are not listed in there, how do I delete the others please?

Thanks Andy

No problem, just remove whatever Viewpoint items are present, then move onto MBAM scan.

Note:
Viewpoint gets on the machine via AIM. When AIM is installed, there is no option for options, it just jumps onto your machine without warning.

Shall I go into Explore and manual delete them as I see the Viewpoint folder in there?

If it will let you, then yes.
Viewpoint leaves behind quite a few of it's folders when uninstalled.

Nah, don't need the rest of the reports.
No real malware found, only registry keys, so lets make sure we aren't missing anything.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
  • Double click DDS.scr to run
  • When complete, DDS.txt will open.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

Hello.
Just a registry file association to fix.

Please download SREng

  • Extract it to Desktop and double click SREngLdr.EXE to run it
  • Select System Repair from the left pane.
  • Click on File Association
  • Select all entries that has an Error status click [Repair]
  • Refer to this image for an example:
    Win32/Cryptor Virus SystemRepair_FileAssocs
  • In your case, it would be .REG.
  • Close SREng now.

How is it now?

Oh, refer check.
Nevermind then.

There doesn't appear to be any malware in the DDS log, how's the machine running?

I still can't view thoses 4 websites. Shall I reboot? Surely it has to be in the registery or something that's they are being blocked out. I have asked my server guy and he says everything is ok on his end as you can view them on anyoter machine but my network.

descriptionWin32/Cryptor Virus EmptyRe: Win32/Cryptor Virus

It's blocking that server or something as I cannot download any email either from it. He put these websites onto another server which I can see one of my other website ok but it's still blocking these 4 out.

Okay.
Lets do a rootkit scan, so download GMER's application from here:
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

Unzip it and start the GMER.exe
Click the Rootkit tab and click the Scan button.
Once done, click the Copy button.
This will copy the results to your clipboard.
Paste the results into a notepad file, because the log will be huge and may need to be uploaded somewhere rather than pasted on the forum.

Warning ! Please, do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan.

If you're having problems with running GMER.exe, try it in safe mode.
This tools works in safe mode. Other rootkitrevealers don't.

That would work, or upload it to a file hoster, mediafire.com for example.

Hello.
Okay, I've consulted with someone, we narrowed it down to a DNS issue.

Lets see if OpenDNS will work around this.
There is videos and tutorials of how to use it on their site:
https://www.opendns.com/start/

See there and set it up for one machine on your network.

descriptionWin32/Cryptor Virus EmptyRe: Win32/Cryptor Virus

Nah, lets go for an even deeper scan.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2
  • Please disable your local AV (Anti-virus) See HERE for how to disable your AV. (Symantec)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

    Win32/Cryptor Virus Rcauto10

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

    Win32/Cryptor Virus Whatne10

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

That was fast.

Hello.

I see that you are running Limewire.
P2P(Peer to peer) applications are designed to help you easily share and distribute files between you and a group of people. But they can also be used to distribute malware, and thus are not considered safe.
The removal of these programs is optional, but highly recommended.
Should you choose to remove them, but you are having trouble doing so, please let me know in your next post here and I will aid you.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Limewire

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

KILLALL::

DirLook::
C:\House

Folder::
c:\Program Files\LimeWire

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:
Win32/Cryptor Virus Sfxdaw

This will open combofix.exe again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run, it may want to reboot after it's done. Post the resulting log back here.

One thing I have noticed, it's speeded up the laptop whatever we have done as it's been a lot of downloading and running software, you can tell me which one it was so I can speed the main computer up Smile...

I forgot to add I didn't delete LimeWire because I use it but I did the other you asked. "KILL ALL". If I have to I will remove if this operation you asked to do do doesn't make it work anymore?

descriptionWin32/Cryptor Virus EmptyRe: Win32/Cryptor Virus

Okay, but you were warned about the risks of P2P. Limewire won't work because the folder is gone and it's been removed from the firewalls "okay" list. You'll need to re-install it.

KILLALL:: just stops any non-needed processes, which I assume has stopped a lot of startup items.
Post a new Hijack This log please and we'll kill some non-needed startup items.

Well in that case as it won't work I will get rid of it. I will reboot and see what happens after I have deleted. What's next if it doesnt work?

It will work, Limewire is gone and there isn't any malware showing in that log.
We'll kill the non essential startup items if post a new Hijack This log. 😉

Where will I find out about my ISP blocking the web sites? But it's only on my computers? Do I need to contact with the person who hosts my websites again as he says everthing is ok?

You'll need to phone up your ISP and ask if they are blocking certain websites.

Thanks for all your help and I will post a new one tomorrow as on my main computer when I upload SP3 it goes to mode screen and gives my options how to start the computer and it doesn't like it and I have to do a system restore.

Again thanks for all your help! Andy

Hello.
HJT says SP3 is already installed, so what are you trying to upgrade to?

There was never really a virus present.

Nooo I have it on this computer (laptop). But not on my main computer. Everytime I try it, it come up with the black screen as where do I want to go: Example.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with internet
Windows

I am course do and it restarts and puts me back on the same screen again. So I just do a system restore and then just don't do updates.

There has to of been something as now when I do an AVG scan computer. It goes through all the files and shows nothing. No files nothing and it always does. Example cookies and all that. It hows nothing.

Showing cookies is good, means no malware.
Not sure why updates crashes the machine.
