Mozilla is already developing Firefox 3.6 code-named Namoroka (a Madagascar national park.) Slated for an early-to-mid 2010 release, the browser will be marketed as Firefox.next (FX) moniker in a nod to new technologies set to take Firefox to the next level. Speed remains the paramount focus, especially in terms of user interface improvemens, startup time and tab handling. There is also a better integration with the host OS and web apps, new personalization and customization features, souped up tabs management. An all-new tasks-based navigation should keep feature-hungry users happy. The first nightly build that dropped late last week provides us with an early glimpse of exciting FX improvements.
Firefox Next (version 3.6) will be based on the Gecko 1.9.2 layout engine that packs up to date support for the latest HTML5 and CSS 3 specification. Firefox 3.5 Beta (formerly 3.1) runs 1.9.1 version of the Gecko engine.Like every pre-alpha nightly builds, Firefox 3.6 pre-alpha lacks the usual "Firefox" branding in favor of the "Minefield" label that clearly indicates you shouldn't expect stability and reliability of a beta release.
Concept mockup of a planned "private bookmarking" feature that will allow you to file a bookmark so that it doesn't show up as a suggested item in the location bar.
Pre-Alpha 1 version of Firefox 3.6 has bookmark manager with bulk tagging support, enabling you to easily apply or remove tags to a group of bookmarks at once.
Tabs now have thumbnails, shown when you drag a tab to a new location.
Concept mockup of an improved built-in player that handles audio and video files embedded via HTML5
