Sality virus detected on Thumb drive

Hi,
I have a serious problem. I run a machine which has mcafee security centre and it is up to date. Recently my thumb drive got infected by the Sality virus from a computer in campus. When i brought it home, i couldn't access my folders. And mcafee says that it has detected sality (W32/Sality.gen.) and can't remove it. I tried various ways to remove it but to no avail. So after that I ran a scan with my mcafee and it to my shock it deleted those folders from my thumb drive! Later i checked the space on my thumb drive and it showed that the space is still taken up but the folders are not there. Is there a way to retrieve those folders back now assuming there is no back up? And how do i get rid of that infection if it comes back without losing my folders as I did? Your help is much appreciated.

I have bad news.

Game over for your machine, Sality is a file infector, infecting EVERY .exe and .scr file on the machine, hence why Mcafee can't clean it. We cannot save your machine, best option is to format. But, we might be able to save the stick and protect it from future infections.

First, when you plugged the stick in, what drive letter does it use? To find out, Go to Start > open "My Computer"

Second.

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

• Double click and run the installer.
  
• It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  
• After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  
• Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.
  

My thumb drive uses the (K) as it's drive letter.

I did the scan with HijackThis and this what was posted in the notepad file.

Okay, lets get this stick cleaned up.

Do you have another machine we can use also? because as soon as the stick is cleaned, it will get re-infected from the infected machine.

We have to remove Mcafee because it will interfere with this next tool.

• Click Start >> Control Panel.
  
• Under the Programs click Uninstall a Program
  
• Highlight Mcafe security center/suite
  
• Click on the Uninstall/Change button at the top.

• Make sure Mcafee is uninstalled before running Combofix.
  
• Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  
• Follow the prompts.
  NOTE:
  
• Tell Combofix NOT to download the recovery console(If prompted...).
  
• Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  
• Allow combofix to run
  
• Post C:\combofix.txt back here.
  
  Note:
  Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
  

is there a way to do this without taking out mcafee??

oh n 1 more thing...mcafee blocked sality b4 it entered my pc. so only the stick was infected but mcafee took it out of the stick as well. is this 2nd step necessary for the recovery of the files on board?

Hello.
Don't run Combofix now, there is new tools developed to deal with USB infections.

Please download USBNoRisk to your Desktop and run it by double clicking the program's icon.

1. Wait a couple of seconds for initial scan to finish.
   
2. Connect all of your USB storage devices to the PC, one at a time, and keep each one connected at least for 10 seconds.
   
3. If there are more USB storage devices to scan, please take a note about the order in which these were connected.
   
4. After all the devices are scanned, right click in the Monitor tab, and choose "Save log". That will open the log in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log into this thread.
   

Explanation: USB storage devices are all the USB devices that get their own partition letter at connecting to the PC, e.g. flash drives (thumb/pen drives, USB sticks), external HDDs, MP3/MP4 players, digital cameras, memory cards (SD cards, Sony Memory Stick, MultiMedia Cards etc.), some mobile phones, some GPS navigation devices etc.
