My daughter brought her computer to me and said she could not get on the internet. When I booted it up the Program directory displayed, and a warning popped up that "the computer may not be protected". I clicked on the red icon and it showed that AVG FREE was out of date. I opened AVG and tried to update. A window popped up saying the update failed. I tried to go on line to update AVG. The homepage loaded. I did a search for AVG and clicked on the offical site. I was taken to a different site selling Hijack utilities. I closed IE7 and reopened it. A box popped up suggesting a fix. When I tried to close the box it started downloading something. I quickly closed IE7. I then went back to the AVG program and ran a nonupdated virus scan. The scan revealed a virus: Trojan Horse Generic_c.TST. AVG sent it to the storage vault. I then ran Glary Utilities and it discovered: "Slawsearch Hijacker" and deleted it. I tried to run Ad-Aware but Microsoft shut it down. I then tried to go online and got " Microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to close". This is totally wierd to me. I downloaded "HiJackThis" on another computer and then downloaded it via CD onto the infected computer. Since the infected computer can't go online, I networked the log to another computer to send it to you. Thanks in advance for your help. The log:

I get online ok now. When I click on "Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here", I get "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". I downloaded the set-up on another computer and transfered it to the infected computer. When I click on the set-up nothing happens.

Okay, tdss is here. The first link in this speech is most likely blocked, so use the second link.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: HERE or HERE.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wtx73560.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gojcjk.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
4. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

No, it seems to be happening alot lately, but it's not fatal. I think it's something connected to a USB port, a printer maybe.
Lets kill it now.

Hmmm.
I know why the program files folder is opening at startup, I can see the reason why in the DDS log.

Run MBAM again and DDS again and post the two new logs, we'll see what we can find.

Hello.
I think I found the problem, something I over looked earlier.

  • Now open a new notepad file.
  • Input this into the notepad file:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\SecurityProviders]
    "SecurityProviders"="msapsspc.dll, schannel.dll, digest.dll, msnsspc.dll"

  • Save this as fix.reg, save it to your desktop.
  • Double click fix.reg to run it.
  • Select yes to the registry merge prompt.

We'll delete the file causing the problem now.
Were gonna use OTMoveIt again, so if you need the link, download it again from the above link we first used it.

  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :files
    c:\windows\system32\msansspc.dll

    :commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [reboot]

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste instructions for items to be Moved" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please post the OTMoveIt log.

Yes, I know, we'll fix it now.
Press Start > All Programs > "Startup" folder > If "Program folders" is there, then right click it > delete it.

descriptionWierd virus problem EmptyRe: Wierd virus problem

more_horiz
No, it's not there.

descriptionWierd virus problem EmptyRe: Wierd virus problem

more_horiz
So what is there in that Startup folder?

descriptionWierd virus problem EmptyRe: Wierd virus problem

more_horiz
It was hiding in a folder named HP Updates. I deleted it.

descriptionWierd virus problem EmptyRe: Wierd virus problem

more_horiz
You could delete the entire HP updates folder too.
How is the machine now?

descriptionWierd virus problem EmptyRe: Wierd virus problem

more_horiz
I deleted the entire folder. The only thing left now is on boot up it opens a web page telling me that my prescription has run out on an old spyware program I don't have. They are trying to get me to pay to get it running again. Of course I don't click on it.

descriptionWierd virus problem EmptyRe: Wierd virus problem

more_horiz
Is that fake program or actually a legit warning about one of your programs ran out?

descriptionWierd virus problem EmptyRe: Wierd virus problem

more_horiz
Is the warning about spysubtract?

descriptionWierd virus problem EmptyRe: Wierd virus problem

more_horiz
Yes, but it was under a different name. It probably came with the computer. I uninstalled the program. It boots up clean now. Thank you very much. We worked on this for over 10 hours. I really appreciate your hard work!

Maybe so, but we did it, and that's what counts. 😉
We have to secure you now.

I see you have Adobe Reader version 6 installed on here, this is old and has holes malware may abuse, we need to close these holes.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Adobe Reader 6

Then download and install version 9 from here:
http://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/

Your version of Java is also outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.
  • Select the first option where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    - Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Please make sure the new version of Java is installed before you run JavaRa.

Please download JavaRa from here

  • First, unzip it.
  • Then run JavaRa.
  • Select English from the drop down menu and press Select.
  • This will open JavaRa.
  • Press Remove older versions
  • Press yes to the prompt.
  • It will make a log file of what it's removed.
  • Copy and paste the log back here.

2. Click the System Restore tab.

4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.
The link can be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin

Thanks . I have applied most of the recommendations above. I installed: Mozilla Firefox and Spybot - Search And Destroy. I kept AVG Free 8.0. I plan to run these once a week. When should I run Malwarebytes Anti - Malware?

Ron

Once a week should be okay.

Once again - THANKS!

One more thing: Is there any reason I should keep the Avenger and OTMoveIt files? Can I just delete the folders out of the C:\ Directory?
Thanks
Ron
