Hi,

I have Vista in my notebook. Suddenly for the past 2 days, when I try to on, it says operating system not found. I have to switch it off couple of times before it starts or sometimes even more attempts are needed. Sometimes I even get a blank black screen. Is it because of power settings or something to do with OS or RAM. Kindly help!!!

Rgds

Karthik

This usually indicates one of 3 things:

(1) The BIOS no longer detects the hard drive

(2) The hard drive itself is damaged or contains bad sectors

(3) The Master Boot Record (MBR) is damaged or corrupted either by Malware or other means.

Before we attempt to repair the MBR or any drive bad sectors etc, we must first establish that your system is clean from any Malware infection or we may cause further damage to the partition table.

If your able to boot to windows, please submit a current HiJackThis log here for me to take a look at for you!

Regards

It doesnt start any more. My laptop has got completely black out and it doesnt start even after number of attempts. I am assuming it to be a hardware problem. Any suggestions?

descriptionOperating System Not Found EmptyRe: Operating System Not Found

Can you boot to safe mode?

The log shows some malware, but it shouldn't cause the screen to black out.

descriptionOperating System Not Found EmptyRe: Operating System Not Found

When I switch it on, nothing is coming up. I can see all the LEDs indacting "power connection", "DVD buttons" etc are glowing but the usual HP pavilion screen followed by Vista booting process is not coming anymore.

descriptionOperating System Not Found EmptyRe: Operating System Not Found

Then yeah, probably is a hardware issue, and with it being a laptop, that isn't easy to fix.
There's only 3 things you can normally access with ease on a laptop:
The battery/RAM/hardrive

All the rest is hidden under the plastic.
You may have to take it back to whoever sold you it (Dell, etc) and ask if they can fix it.

descriptionOperating System Not Found EmptyRe: Operating System Not Found

Would you suggest me to check if RAM has got some loose connection with Motherboard or would you suggest me to take it the repair shop directly without taking any chance? FYI, it is HP notebook and out of warranty too

descriptionOperating System Not Found EmptyRe: Operating System Not Found

You can check it, but ram doesn't just come lose, RAM sticks use little clips at the side to hold them in.

descriptionOperating System Not Found EmptyRe: Operating System Not Found

Check that your hard disks are properly connected, it's quite easy to open the casing below to check. You can get the HP laptop manual from the HP website to check which part of the casing the hard disk is located at.

descriptionOperating System Not Found EmptyRe: Operating System Not Found

Ok. I shall try it and get back to you. Thanks a lot!!!

descriptionOperating System Not Found EmptyRe: Operating System Not Found

I was able to open the case to see the HD but how to figure out if it is connected or not. I am not able to find out that.

descriptionOperating System Not Found EmptyRe: Operating System Not Found

more_horiz
It should be connected, give it a little nudge to make sure it's tight. Another thing, your operating system might somehow be corrupted or trashed which is why it is not found, I just remembered that if hard disk is not properly connected it will get a disk boot failure.

Do you have a recovery CD?

descriptionOperating System Not Found EmptyRe: Operating System Not Found

more_horiz
No I dont have recovery CD with me. As of now I had decided to give to HP tech guys for fixing it. Is there a way to find out the problem ourselves? To be on safer side, I have went ahead and purchased extended warranty so that if it is a serious hardware prblm then my notebook would be covered.
