Hello,
I also have been infected by the Spyware.ISpynow adware, with the windows-like security alert pop-up and the Internet Explorer hijack screen (for some thankful reason my firefox is safe). Any help to remove this from my machine would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks for the detailed instructions. I followed them closely. I ran HijackThis and had no problem. I did have a few problems with the recommended deletions prior to running Combofix:

1. I was unable to find and delete c:\windows\system32\ckvo.exe - i ran a windows search too and couldn't find this file anywhere - was it already deleted or hidden?
2. I couldn't delete two DLL files in the MyWebsearch folder: M3OUTLCN.DLL, MWSOESTB.DLL - when I tried to delete them i was blocked by a windows error
3. I couldn't find the folder: C:\Documents and Settings\CEP User\Application Data\Google\runhh6110411.exe <== file doesnā€™t exist

I ran Combofix anyway, and looking at the log file it seems that it solved problems 2 and 3 above. So only the problem with ckv0.exe may still remain. Is this a problem?

So far, I can run IE without any hijack screen, and there's no insidious red ispynow shield at the lower right of my screen, so for this I THANK YOU!!!

Mike

Hello.
Your flash drives are infected, do you have any flash drives currently not plugged in?

descriptionspyware.ispynow infection EmptyRe: spyware.ispynow infection

more_horiz
Yes, I have several. How do I figure out which one(s) are infected?

descriptionspyware.ispynow infection EmptyRe: spyware.ispynow infection

more_horiz
All of them are, we have to stop cleaning your machine.
Plug in the external drives because we need to clean them first.

As soon as you plug them in, you'll get re-infected, but we'll clean it.
Once they are all plugged in, delete combofix and download the new version from my links before.

Ok, I plugged in four flash drives, downloaded the new combofix and ran it. Here's the log file:

Hello.
This is going to be long, so please take your time doing this.

  • Now open a new notepad file.
  • Input this into the notepad file:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{13a54636-1c02-11dd-9874-001422dbf954}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{13cd120f-e3bc-11db-a649-001422dbf954}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{1cf1b7be-29ca-11dd-9879-001422dbf954}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{997aa58b-7572-11dd-989b-001422dbf954}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{a37a1fcf-e299-11db-a647-001422dbf954}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{a87db5a0-6d98-11dd-9899-001422dbf954}]

  • Save this as fix.reg, save it to your desktop.
  • Double click fix.reg to run it.
  • Select yes to the registry merge prompt.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: HERE.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
G:\c9hehpa.bat
H:\autorun.inf

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avengerā€™s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Then run this.

Please download Flash_Disinfector from HERE

  • First, download it to your desktop.
  • Now double click it to run it and will tell it you what to do when you open it.
  • It will temporarily kill explorer.exe and your desktop will go blank.
  • Let Flash_Disinfector do it's job and it will restart explorer.exe for you.
  • It will make a dummy autorun.inf in the root of every drive.
  • You can now delete Flash_Disinfector.exe.

Please post the avenger log.

Hmmm.
What problems remain now?

descriptionspyware.ispynow infection EmptyRe: spyware.ispynow infection

more_horiz
As far as I know, none - after I followed your advice from your first message the obvious signs of the ispynow had disappeared. i'm not sure about the flash drives b/c i had never seen anything malicious pop up before from them, even though i have suspected at times that they may be infected (from having been used in several computers in Bolivia). Am I in the clear?

descriptionspyware.ispynow infection EmptyRe: spyware.ispynow infection

I suspect they are now you've run flash_disinfector.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.
  • Select the first option where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    - Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Please make sure the new version of Java is installed before you run JavaRa.

Please download JavaRa from here

  • First, unzip it.
  • Then run JavaRa.
  • Select English from the drop down menu and press Select.
  • This will open JavaRa.
  • Press Remove older versions
  • Press yes to the prompt.
  • It will make a log file of what it's removed.
  • Copy and paste the log back here.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
