Malware in machine - brastk, karna, TDSS

Hi,

I have malware in my machine running Windows XP SP3. I have used malwarebytes, HiJack Panda Activescan and Spybot. I believe I have removed brastk and karna as I do not find any entries for them either in my hard disk or in the registry. I used brastkremover.exe for this.
But I do have lots of folders having the name TDSS in C:\Avenger and C:\Windows\System32

First, lets lighten the load, uninstall all this via Add/remove programs.
You can open Add/remove programs by doing the following.

Press Start > Control Panel > Add/remove programs
Uninstall all this by pressing the Remove button on the right after selecting each one.

Second. I see you are running two AV's (Antivirus's). You have Symentec and AVG 8, running two AV's is a bad idea, they can conflict and cause more problems. So uninstall Symantec KB-DocID:2003093015493306 in the above uninstall list.

Third. Are you getting help elsewhere? The avenger is extemely powerful and we don't normally go for using that tool. But you can delete C:\avenger anyway, the avenger folder is just a backup of deleted files.

And now, lets start cleaning. The hijack this log was taken in safe mode, are you able to get to normal mode?
If so, delete these files to stop the random shutdowns.

• Download combofix from here, use one of the bottom section links - combofix.exe
  
• Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  
• Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  
• ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
  ***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***
  
  **Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.
  
  
  
• The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.
  
  
  
  
• Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.

Thanks for your immediate response.

1) I have uninstalled all the Java updates as you have mentioned
2) I do not have the Symantec Anti Virus (AV) installed. I had just downloaded it. When I went to Control panel -> Add/Remove Programs, I could not see any entry that starts with Symantec or Norton. I have AVG only.
3) I am not getting help from anywhere else.
4) I have removed the c:\avenger folder
5) I am able to go into Normal mode
6) I found c:\windows\system32\tdssosvd.dat and have removed it.
7) There are no files of type (c:\windows\system32\drivers\tdss****.sys). I did a manual scrutiny and also used Windows search. But no files
8) On running ComboFix.exe, the Windows Recovery Console was downloaded and installed
9) ComboFix ran and while I was typing this message, the machine rebooted. I hope that is how it works. On rebooting, a message that "Preparing Log Report. Do not run any programs until ComboFix has finished" came up. However startup programs like AVG, UniBlue RegistryBooster etc started.

Since the output of ComboFix was too big for the message, I am posting it in the next post.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 10.
  
• Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10".
  
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
  
• In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
  - Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2

Below I have posted a list of tools you can use to protect yourself in future.

Download ATF Cleaner

• Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  
• Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  
• Click the Empty Selected button.
  
• Close ATF-Cleaner.exe.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers.

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or

the AVG Resident Shield alert has just popped up now with the message:

Process Name: c:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe

What do I do?

It's okay, unless you use system restore, it poses no threat.
Press Start > Right click my computer > Properties > System Restore tab.
Then tick Turn off system restore on all drives.
Press Okay.
Now, reboot your machine. Follow the instructions again, but untick it.

This will create a fresh restore point and delete the old infected ones.

Few other questions:
1) I have AVG now. Should I replace it with Norton. Is it better?
2) Also you mentioned that FireFox is better than IE. How about Google Chrome?

1. No. Norton has caused me huge problems and headaches in the past few days. I would not go there. AVG8 is smaller and just so much less work.

2. Chrome is still beta, while I use Chrome myself, I think it's pretty safe. Google are working many hours on Chrome to keep it safe for everyone.
