The windows update issues still seems to present, still won't resume from sleep.  Also still can't run malwarebytes.  Can't start the wmi service, if I try to I get the error message.
"The executable program that this service is configured to run does not implemented the service"
This also appears in all the options/categories when I run Speccy.

Would you like to repair install Windows 7?

You DO preserve your user accounts, data, programs, and system drivers.

ITEMS THAT WILL BE RESET TO DEFAULT OR AFFECTED:

  •    Sounds

  • Services

  • Visual Effects Settings

  • Device Drivers - Be sure to have these handy to reinstall. They do not always remain after the repair (upgrade) install.

  • You may lose the ability to sign on to MSN Messenger, to solve this problem have a look at this thread Unable to sign in to WLM.

  • You may lose your custom themes due to not having permisions set on the old themes. Go to the hidden themes folder at C:/Users/(User-Name)/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/Themes, then Take Ownership of the themes folder and you will now have all your   themes back.

  • It has been reported that you may also lose your Media Center gadget after doing the repair install.

  • Windows Updates will need to be checked and reinstalled again.

If you have SP1 installed, you must use a SP1 Windows disk.  If you have 32bit installed, you must use a 32bit Windows 7 install disk.

Please follow the instructions at below link.

I've tried to do the repair/install method.  But i'm still having the same issue with WIndows not recognising any dvd.  In explorer, it shows as a win 7 dvd and when you click properties it shows it is at full capacity, but when you try and open the disc, it treats it as  blank cd/dvd with the relevant options.
This happens with all the disks I have tried.

Does the CD/DVD optical drive work with other DVDs?

It works with film dvd, and other software cd's.  I've tried the windows.  I've tried the windows dvd in another machine and it's fine.  My dvd player itself works fine, ite detects what it is until you try and open it.
Would the changing of those upper and lower registry values of affected this?

descriptionMultiple issues - Page 2 EmptyRe: Multiple issues

more_horiz
Well you were not suppose to delete upper and lower registry values for the CD/DVD optical drive have you?

That was from when I was in the Malware section, don't kow if it was specific to the dvd, but I recall reading about it sometime ago.  It's the only major change I can think of as to why it's not working now.I'll try the fix it application now.

EDIT: I've tried the fixit app and I get an error with code 80072EFE   "we're sorry but the program encountered an error while trying to contact the server, please try again later"

Uninstall CD/DVD optical drive from Device Manager and restart your computer this will reinstall all missing registry values.

I'm afraid not, just the cd, it was pre-installed on the laptop, there was a sticker on the laptop with it on, but that came off some time ago.  I did think about downloading the standalone iso package for windows.  I have sudden;y been able to install one of the updates that was failing though.  So something has changed along this process.

Please give me little time to write you instructions on how you can download and mount Windows 7 ISO image.

You can use Magical Jelly Bean to view your Windows product key if that is Windows already activated.

Download Windows 7 Disc Images (ISO Files) from Microsoft server using your Windows retail product key.

If you have a OEM product key then download the Windows 7 Professional ISO image from below link.

Windows 7 Professional Free Download ISO 32/64-bit

You may have to uninstall Service Pack 1 as this Windows 7 ISO image does not have Service Pack 1 integrated in ISO image.

You will need to mount the Windows 7 ISO image and double click the Setup.exe file to start repair install (in-Place Upgrade) process.

You can use WinCDEmu to mount the Windows 7 ISO image.

Install WinCDEmu and give it permission to install the hardware driver it requires. After you do, just double-click a disc image file to mount it. You can also right-click a disc image file and click “Select drive letter & mount” in the context menu.

To unmount the disc image when you’re done, right-click the virtual disc drive and select “Eject”.

Right, I’ve done those steps. CD player works, I can now update windows so far, the main error messages have disappeared. I can also run and install malware bytes. Only issue remaining on this short test is.. a very slow start up, with few programs loading, and the sleep issue. My system froze when trying to resume from sleep.

descriptionMultiple issues - Page 2 EmptyRe: Multiple issues

more_horiz
Fantastic, lets now deal with those remaining issues.

Please follow the instructions at below tutorial to boost performance of Windows.

Tweaking & Optimizing Window Operating System

Have you installed latest device drivers?

If you have installed latest device drivers where did you obtain the latest device drivers from?

I've gone through all the options in the tweaking section, and carried out all which I already don't do.   Apart from disabling certain services, I know it lists which ones are safe to do so, but just want to check considering nearly got the laptop back to health.

I either updated the drivers through windows update, device manager, or direct from the Intel website.  All are up to date.

Many thanks

You only disable services that you don't use such as "Print Spooler" service if you don't have a printer you don't need this service running.

If your computer is not custom build computer then visit your computer manufacturer website to install latest stable device drivers also upgrade your BIOS firmware if there is a new version.

If your computer is custom build computer then visit your motherboard manufacturer website to install BIOS firmware if there is a new version and visit one at time all of the connected device manufacturer website to install there latest versions of device driver. For example if you have discrete graphic card connected like Nvidia graphic card visit Nvidia website.

Thanks for that, bios firmware is one I missed out.  There is still the issue of the system freezing when trying to resume from sleep, for the time being, I can't see anything else major. I shall monitor other issues over the next day or so.

descriptionMultiple issues - Page 2 EmptyRe: Multiple issues

I think you still need to install latest version of device drivers don't get confuse when Device Manager report your device drivers up to date they may not be as Device Manager checks Microsoft server to see any new device drivers and Microsoft not always have the latest device drivers. I think you said your computer is laptop then you should install device drivers from your laptop manufacturer website as long as there are new versions of the device drivers.  Also don't forget to install all Windows updates.

Right, i've most definitely installed the lates drivers, from the dell website.  Latest bios installed allbeit over a number of reboots.

Up to now all is good, I can now resume from sleep. I've created a restore point.  Installed the free version of Avira.  If all goes well over the next few days, i'd be a happy bunny, as all issues seem to be resolved.
Wish I knew which specific action corrected each individual problem. I'll give an update after the weekend.

Many thanks again!!

Hi again

I just thought i'd give it a few days or so for a reliable update.  Everything seemed to run fine over the weekend, but things are starting to lag again, theres quite a delay sometimes, but not all the time, in applications/windows opening, or say, when click commands are operated.  The issue with resuming from sleep was fixed I thought, it's only failed once. I've done a disk check too, which I thought may of been an issue.  All being said, compared to before it's a massive improvement.

Regards
Dave

Thanks for the reply.

The issues seem to be application loading times, including browser/explorer.  The two mentioned load as if it was loading a picture on dial up  connection in the old days.  There can be up to 3-4 second delay sometimes when using right-click commands or clicking the start menu.  Apps take some time to open when clicking the icon in the notification area, also lags when closing an app.
From our last clean up, I now have all the bar minimum services or process heavy elements, no fancy graphics or wallpapers.

Hope you can get the gist from that

Many thanks

Is the problem happening with all installed programs and web browsers?

Have you test your broadband internet speed?

I have tested the broadband speed, it's just on my system.  Any program browser also, even tried disabling the plugins.  It happens with windows explorer too, folders and folder trees.
Any other possible hardware issues it could be aside from ram/disk?

descriptionMultiple issues - Page 2 EmptyRe: Multiple issues

Please boot your computer into Safe Mode and let us know if the issue resolved or not.

Boot Windows 7 into Safe Mode

  1. Immediately after the computer is powered on or restarted (usually after you hear your computer beep), tap the F8 key in 1 second intervals.

  2. After your computer displays hardware information and runs a memory test, the Advanced Boot Options menu will appear.

    Multiple issues - Page 2 2KMifN7

  3. Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and press Enter key.

Apologies for the delay.

In safe mode with and without networking, it appears to run the same, also there was no issue with the memory modules after testing.
To give an impression of my frustration, I fell like giving it a whack.
