Win 10 boot fail: BSOD error 0xc000000e winload.efi not found

You have one update failed to install and looks like you have not upgrade to Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, version 1709.

Yes, one failed. I then installed it manually.  you should see the same update # as ok

FCUs is just finishing now.

Good if there are more updates install them if not i think you are at clear and everything works.

Usually at this point is when it fail.  One of the follow on 1709 updates seems to corrupt the boot partition.  I'm installing all updates but, I've done this about 5 times.  It works, until one more reboot and then fails.

I don't know if any help but I've enabled "system restore" and created a restore point.  Now all the new 1709 updates are installing.  Sorry this takes so long.

Yes we can use system restore tool to recover your computer only if nothing else works.

updated MS win 10 pro 64 to 1709 with associated other updates

system boots ok

Run MS config, select Safe Mode
System boots into Safe Mode ok
Run MS config, select Normal Start
System gets an error 0x000000e winload.efi is missing

This is the same error as I got during the last update attempt

After booting into Safe Mode and the try a normal boot (no other changes) get this error...

Sys restore error

When in Safe Mode, attempted to run msconfig

Boot with USB
bootrec /scanos shows 2 installations  
1 c:\windows
2. C:\windows.old\windows

Tried bootrec /rebuildbcd
it also finds c:\windows  (I say yes)
then 2nd windows.old (I say no)

The system cannot find the path specified.

I'm stuck here and hope you an help

Please boot your computer with Windows Setup Media and from Windows Recovery Environment.

If you haven't use Automatic Repair (Startup Repair) if this tool wont work then start the Command Prompt.

Please execute following commands and post a screenshot of the commands outputs.





From List Disk command you will found out disk number assigned to Windows installed storage disk and replace X with this disk number.

You can know which disk to select by looking at Size of the disk from here it look like Disk 0 but i'm not sure.

Okay you have selected correct disk don't close the Command Prompt while i write you instructions.

You have followed my instructions not correctly you have assigned a drive letter to System partition not a D: drive letter. You also executed Bcdboot command without exiting the Diskpart command.

Restart your computer lets hope Windows will boot.

Boot to Windows 10 then open Msconfig and please post a screenshot of the Msconfig.

Forget to say which tab please post a screenshot of Boot tab.

Select second entry Windows 10 (\Windows) and click Delete button. Click Apply and OK buttons to restart your computer.

do you know why this happens?  It seems it's common but not everyone has it.

Tell you the true i have no idea why Windows update or which Windows update causing this error.

Don't forget to delete Windows.old folder when you are sure you don't want to revert back Windows 10 to version 1703 you can use Disk Cleanup wizard to delete upgrade files.

I use Acronis and do a full disk backup.  Do you think that I could have just restored the efi partition and it would have worked?

Restoring just EFI partition will not help resolve the issue because you have upgraded to newer version of Windows 10.

Hi, interesting stuff happening with msconfig.

First of all you have solved the issue.  I can now boot up and get to everything.  Thanks!

My original issue of having some issues with MS Config seems to be where the root problem is

Right now, MS config still shows 2 options under the boot tab.  I have deleted the 2nd one and rebooted and it's gone. After another reboot it's back. 

I was thinking of trying BCDEDIT but I'm not sure I know what to do.

Have you deleted Windows.old folder?

I ran the clean up utility but the folder windows.old as well as windows10Upgrade are there

Delete them from Safe Mode.

Also delete that second entry from Msconfig and boot your computer into Windows Recovery Environment and execute below commands.



Reboot your system.

How is everything progressing?

You'd laugh. I've been unable to delete windows.old, even from safe mode.  I'm changing the permissions now.

The good news is that the advice you have given me allowed me to fix the boot process (again) and it's booting up fine.

it seems all is now OK.  msconfig now shows correctly even after reboot.

I have no idea what could force it to hold onto the old windows like that.

I found this forum after many hours of trying to figure out the boot up error I have been receiving for months.

I am running out of options but I have seen a successful clearance of this issue and would like to end the misery for myself.


when I boot up daily I get the blue error 0xc000000e when I try to hit either of F1 F8 or any other option it generally attempts the screen flickers and It doesn't work, if I try the power on/off x3 it will boot up or if I try it twice login to the BIOS and exit it will restart and boot up but I cannot figure out what I need to do..

please can someone help me.
