I run Windows XP, which appears to load as normal. However, when I run any task, they take anything from 5-10 minutes to load up!! Task manager shows that the Idle Process is recording 99%, ie nothing else appears to be running. The last time I loaded, after 30 minutes, activity started and everything appeared to then operate as normal.
I have checked that Windows is uptodate, and have run CCleaner, Malwarebytes, Spybot and McAfee.
What is causing the delay in tasks? And how can I correct it?

Hello and welcome to GeekPolice.Net My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

Please do this even if you don't have the OS disk and report the results

Do you have an XP CD?

If so, place it in your CD ROM drive and follow the instructions below:
•Click on Start > Run and type sfc /scannow then press Enter (note the space between scf and /scannow)
*Let this run undisturbed until the window with the blue progress bar goes away
SFC - Which stands for System File Checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.

Hi again,
I have run SCF. It mandated that a disk was supplied. I dug out a Service pack CD, which seemed to satisfy it. There were 7-8 occurrences in which it the CD was prompted for.
However, having re-booted, my problem still persists.

NB When the 25-30 minute "quiescent state" comes to an end, there is a lot of McAfee activity, including warnings that Firewall was not enabled. Then updates were automatically checked for and obtained. The whole Firewall/update process ran through automatically and ended up with the system apparently working correctly.

Should I be re-checking Windows Update (since I have presumably over-written drivers from the Service Pack?).

Ok, let's dig a bit deeper into that computer.

Download DDS from HERE or HERE and save it to your desktop.

Vista users right click on dds and select Run as administrator (you will receive a UAC prompt, please allow it)

* XP users Double click on dds to run it.
* If your antivirus or firewall try to block DDS then please allow it to run.
* When finished DDS will open two (2) logs.
* Save both reports to your desktop.
* The instructions here ask you to attach the Attach.txt.

Initial tasks take too long to run, after booting. DDS

1) DDS.txt
2) Attach.txt
Instead of attaching, please copy/past both logs into your Thread

Note: DDS will instruct you to post the Attach.txt log as an attachment.
Please just post it as you would any other log by copying and pasting it into the reply.

•Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run.
After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection.
Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
Information on A/V control HERE .Then post your DDS logs. (DDS.txt and Attach.txt )

Before doing this, can I check: the first DDS link leads to a screen saver. The 2nd link leads to relevant screens, but they are in Spanish. Are the links correct?

One point that might be relevant is that I have been getting a prompt that "Sys Config " has been modified. And asking if I want to get notified ongoing. I always just cancel out of it. Should I accept the changes (which I don't know what they are).?

The first link should just give you a pop-up to download and yes, the second link is in spanish. You should be able to get the program by hitting the descargar button. This will also give you a pop-up button to run or save.

This is not a normal waring. Just cancel it each time.Did you recently make and changes to your system such as installing new hardware?

To answer the second question first, I haven't added any new h/w. The first prompt has a box to tick which would avoid having any such prompt each time". Should I select that?

The first prompt has a box to tick which would avoid having any such prompt each time". Should I select that?

Yes, please tick that box.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner to the desktop and run it on the computer with the issue.
Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

Make sure FRST is run under administrator privileges.
Make sure that the Whitelist section is checked.Otherwise, the log will be very long.
You Security programs may prevent the tool from running. If this happens, disable the security program until the scan is completed.

  • Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.

  • Press "Scan".

  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

The download failed. It appeared to download 406kb, and then reported as failed. There is no file stored in my download folder.

Can you download it from another computer?

descriptionInitial tasks take too long to run, after booting. EmptyRe: Initial tasks take too long to run, after booting.

Well...... Yes, I have downloaded it onto a USB stick. However, when I try to list the files on my target computer, the file appears briefly and is then deleted!! NB The file is originally there, and its size can be displayed via "Properties" (on my target computer)
I have also tried emailing it to myself. But as before it appears to download, and then shows "failed to download"!.
So I can't run it.

Download the program to your memory stick. Copy the program to your desktop. Right-click and select "Run as Adm."

The Good News is that I have managed to download FSS.exe to my desktop. (Yesterday I wasn't able to copy the file since it was deleted from the USB stick. However, it worked today, and also the GeekPolice download linked worked).
One difference is that I have selected to not show the Sys Config Utility prompt. However, i did get a black screen window: CMD.exe, showing "The system cannot fins the file selected". the screen nshowed one prompt: "C:\WINDOWS\system32>". I closed it and carried on.
However, when I run FSS.exe I don't get a "Run as Admin" option. I only have one user approved for the system, and it is the only option that was provided. When I selected it, I didn't unselect the option to "Protect my computer data etc etc)". Is this option ok, and should I unselect the "Protect my computer option..."?

Sorry about these difficulties.

Leave it selected.
Also please run SFC again and tell me if it asks for the disk.

I have re-tried FSS, with the same results.
I also re-ran SFC using my "Re-installation CD" Service pack 2. I was prompted to retry finding a file ten times. Is this the right CD for me to use?

I also have a DELL Drivers and Utilities CD, but my PC has been rebuilt as a Compac Presario.

I also re-ran SFC using my "Re-installation CD" Service pack 2.

It should be the OS disk that came with the computer. It's not too hard to identify. It's the one with the official XP design. Or, it could be one from Dell with their logo on it. If you don't have it, you perhaps borrow one but it must be the same version that's installed on your computer.

I have failed to find an OS disk, I'm afraid. My PC was a dell , and had the motherboard replaced to be a Compaq. However, the shop that did it is unable to provide a suitable disk. I do have the original DELL Drivers and Utilities " CD.
What next?

You may be able to download it from here.

That link was useful, in that I used Belarc to give me a list of the system & hardware that is installed. This includes a Product Key, which I was advised that I would need.
However, I am not clear what type of disk to download, - I have always had difficulty creating CD discs. Also are you advising me to purchase one in order to investigate my system problem?
I would prefer another route if that is possible. (I could ask a friend for advise if necessary).

No, don't spend any money on XP. If you're going to purchase another OS you should really consider Windows 7 if your computer can handle it.

I have been told that Windows 7 can run in XP mode.

Hi again. I have just about given up on resolving this behaviour. (NB By chance I was talking to a workmate, and she, too had this problem - but lived with it!). However, I think my system is now working correctly.
The system stopped running Chrome, and Adobe Flash Player didn't appear to upgrade properly. So I uninstalled both of them and re-loaded them. My system now re-boots normally! Perhaps coincidence. But I pass the info onto you since it might help you build up a picture. You can therefore close this entry. And I hope not to have to open a replacement plea for help! Thanks.

Ok, let's do some clean up and we'll be finished.

This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download DelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create Registry backup
  • Purge System Restore Points
  • Re-set system settings

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.
