So I have just about finished setting up my new Windows home server. The plan is to have a network share so each user on my lan can store data to it. The issue I have is:

I want to store all of my data on this network share, and use windows offline files to keep a copy locally on my laptop so I can access my media files and work when I'm out and about. If this media server were to fail for some reason, would the local copies on my laptop still be safe? And would I be able to simply copy the local files back to the media server?

I hope this makes sense, and thanks in advance.

Hi,
Files on your laptop should be safe until you delete it. So, if your Windows Server fails, and you have all data from it on your laptop, you can easy set up Windows Server again, and move all data from laptop to server again.

By the way, if you protect your Windows Server with firewall and some antivirus, you don't have to worry about crash.

Sorry to be a pain, but I just have one more question,

I have set up offline sync so that all of my files are on the network drive now, and none of my data files (music, documents, pictures etc) are on the local disk(C:\)

I have a portable hard drive and a flash drive which I use norton 360 backup to backup the portable drive and flash drive to the network drive. This backup is not synced offline.

I want to store a backup of my data which is on the network drive, on my portable drive just for triple protection. However norton backup wont allow me to backup a network drive.

Will the built in windows backup program backup the local cached copy of my files.

The main reason for multiple backups is incase of a natural disaster (flood, burglar etc.

Thanks again!!

Hi,

Thanks again for your help.
I like using norton's backup solutions, so I think i'll skip the whole offline files thing and use synctoy to sync the media files I need to my server so they can be played on my ps3 in the other room. Then i'll also use norton to backup all my drives to my server, and I can also add additional files their if I want/need to.
