Wave sound muting by itself and internet explorer popups

Hello, I've been having a sound problem for 2 days now. When I sign onto the computer the wave in sound control mutes by itself. Though when I raise it back up, it would be muted again in a few moments. Also, the there would be random Internet explorer ad pops up at random times, even though im not using the browser. (I use FireFox) So I'm suspecting malware, but don't know what to do about it. Can anybody help me?
