I will post hijack this log below. Our computer has two user accounts and thankfully only mine seems to be infected and I am using my wife's user account. However over night the virus totally blocked all browsers and email on my user account. I ran hijack this from my wife's 'side' I hope it can fixed from that side too

___Thanks, Mike________

Hello! We need to do some diagnostics to get started.

1. Please download Profiles by noahdfear.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click profiles.exe and post its log when you reply

2. Download Win32kDiag by ad13 and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click Win32kDiag.exe to run Win32kDiag and let it finish.
  • When it states "Finished! Press any key to exit...", press any key on your keyboard to close the program.
  • Double-click on the Win32kDiag.txt file that is located on your Desktop and post the entire contents of that log as a reply to this topic.

3. Please download Cheetah-Anti-Rogue by me, and save to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on Cheetah-Anti-Rogue.zip, and extract the file to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on Cheetah-Anti-Rogue.cmd to start.
  • It will finish quickly and launch a log.
  • Post the contents of it in your next reply.

4. In your next reply, please post the following logs for my review:
  • Profiles log (1)
  • Win32kDiag log (2)
  • Cheetah log (3)

Thanks! Smile...

Thank you so much for your help. I am posting the three logs below. As it happens, before your reply I was able to use Malwarebytes antimalware in the manner advised in the removal guide on your site. (From the "Jeannie" side) It seemed to _largely_ fix things. However, now from my profile "Mike"(which was the infected one, when I click on a program (like IE or Thunderbird or Dreamweaver), a screen pops up with "OPEN WITH" at the top and a list of programs to open the programs with-- which seems illogical since the programs are already executable but it doesn't seem to work anyway. However if I click a document, the associated program opens up no problem. Below are the logs.

Mike

My user account "Mike" still has the situation that I can't start programs by left-clicking, or by right clicking and 'open'. I can start them however by right clicking and 'run as administrator' or by clicking a document that needs that program.
This is unchanged after running the four programs

Do you have UAC enabled, or are you not sure?

User Account Control is enabled, I just checked

descriptionWindows Defender Virus Type on Vista EmptyRe: Windows Defender Virus Type on Vista

OK. We are going to change a couple of things.

See this site to download and use ERUNT: http://www.myantispyware.com/2010/02/27/how-to-backup-windows-registry-using-erunt/

============================================

Please open Notepad and enter in the following:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin"=0x00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin"=0x00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"ConsentPromptBehaviorUser"=0x00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"ConsentPromptBehaviorUser"=0x00000001

Then, click File > Save as...
Save as fixpermissions.reg to your Desktop.
Choose Save as type... All Files.
Click Save.

Then, exit Notepad.

Double-click on fixpermissions.reg, confirm any prompts and let it finish.

Then, reboot your computer, and tell me if you are still getting that prompt on program opens.

descriptionWindows Defender Virus Type on Vista EmptyRe: Windows Defender Virus Type on Vista

more_horiz
Did the above, still getting the same prompt

descriptionWindows Defender Virus Type on Vista EmptyRe: Windows Defender Virus Type on Vista

more_horiz
Try this and let me know if you get the same message:

Please navigate to this webpage: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222 and see the section "Fix it for me" and click the Microsoft Fix-It button. This will download a fix utility to repair the security settings on your computer, due to damages of malware or other harmful system changes. Install the file after download.

descriptionWindows Defender Virus Type on Vista EmptyRe: Windows Defender Virus Type on Vista

more_horiz
ran this, but no change

descriptionWindows Defender Virus Type on Vista EmptyRe: Windows Defender Virus Type on Vista

more_horiz
Please disable UAC: http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm

Then let me know if you still have the issue.

descriptionWindows Defender Virus Type on Vista EmptyRe: Windows Defender Virus Type on Vista

more_horiz
did it still have issue

descriptionWindows Defender Virus Type on Vista EmptyRe: Windows Defender Virus Type on Vista

more_horiz
My user account "Mike" still has the situation that I can't start programs by left-clicking, or by right clicking and 'open'. I can start them however by right clicking and 'run as administrator' or by clicking a document that needs that program.
This is unchanged after running the four programs

You said this. So, if you are still having the problem, try to disable UAC and see if the programs do that anymore.

descriptionWindows Defender Virus Type on Vista EmptyRe: Windows Defender Virus Type on Vista

more_horiz
I mean I changed it yesterday to turn UAC off at your suggestion. Yes I have had UAC on but after your last suggestion, I turned it off and it seemed to make no difference

Hi Smile...

Optional Programs
I see you are running uTorrent, a P2P application. I suggest to read the following, and then decided whether you want to keep it or not: http://www.helpmyos.com/learn-security-f40/p2p-programs-t1102.htm

Update Software
Please download the newest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader from Adobe.com

Before installing: it is important to remove older versions of Acrobat Reader since it does not do so automatically and old versions still leave you vulnerable.
Go to the Control Panel and enter Add or Remove Programs (Programs and Features in Vista/7).
Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Uninstall/Remove each of them.

Once old versions are gone, please install the newest version.

==

Please download the newest version of Java from Java.com.

OTL Fixes
Please run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, copy and paste in the following:

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top.
  • Note: The fix for OTL automatically hides your Desktop and Start menu so the fix can be completed. Do not be alerted, this is normal.
  • Please do not exit the program. It might take a while to fix, but allow it to run. If it asks to reboot the computer, allow it to reboot. If the program freezes, and the computer fails to reboot - let me know.
    Lastly, post the contents of the log. (Located at C:\_OTL\Moved Files)
