descriptionXP Antivirus Pro 2010 - Virus posing as Security Center and antivirus program EmptyXP Antivirus Pro 2010 - Virus posing as Security Center and antivirus program

more_horiz
It seems that I've caught what seems to be a virus. I just encountered one like it yesterday while going on a specific site. That one however, was solved by System Restore, or at least temporarily. Today, I visit the same site and receive this virus, which prevents me from restoring to another state. This one does not disable Task Manager, change my desktop background, or block me from registry editing. However, I haven't the knowledge, as you can see, to actually try to fix it myself. Also, I'm not supposed to touch anything and wait for help while I am posting this.

I am using Windows XP as my web browser. The virus is named XP Antivirus Pro 2010. At some occasions, random pop ups will appear on the screen labeled System hijack! or Tracking software found! and a description of whatever trojan or spyware I apparently caught. There is a quick launch button on the bottom, with the Security Center icon. The interface for some of the larger pop ups is also similar to the Security Center layout. In addition, the Security Center will sometimes open by itself, showing that XP Antivirus Pro 2010 has embedded itself into it.

It seems that the virus is designed to make some money, as there will be large windows popping up that suggest I register and pay to get the latest protection. I have a feeling that all of this will eventually be gone, but still leave a registry scar or something disastrous.

Edit: I have looked at http://www.GeekPolice.net/malware-removal-guides-f12/remove-antivirus-pro-2010-removal-guide-t13977.htm before posting this yesterday and tried to download the Malwarebytes but the virus is blocking me from getting to it at all, seemingly.

I've also tried to find any files to manually delete the virus but it seems they are hȋdden or aren't even there at all. nȯne of the processes are there either.

Here is the Hijackthis log.

Hello.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator.DTOP2\dtc.exe \s

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

I appreciate the help A LOT, Belahzur. Thank you so much. So far, I opened Hijackthis, did only a system scan, and checked the box for F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator.DTOP2\dtc.exe \s.

However, when I clicked on the link to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and double clicked mbam-setup.exe, I couldn't get much further than clicking "Run". I'm still waiting for a Malwarebytes box to come up to install but it still seems that it's being blocked. Unfortunately I can't post the MBAM Log because of this.

Download OTL by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

I'm sorry for not saying anything and wasting your time; the computer ended up being reformatted. Thank you for the help. I really do appreciate it.
I'll try making a contribution in the future, though right now I'm just a random person who only came here for some help.
