The first thing you need to do is download the three files below and save them on your desktop.

PeToUSB.zip

USBprep.zip

BOOTsect.zip

Once you have these downloaded, extract PeToUSB.zip and USBprep.zip separately. Then, copy everything from the PeToUSB folder to the USBprep folder. Now, copy the USBprep folder and place it in C:\

Also, extract BOOTsect.zip and put these files directly in the C:\ directory as well.

Next, you need to put your Windows CD in your optical drive and copy all of the contents from it over to a folder in the C:\ directory. I named mine "XP" so it would be easier to recall later.

How to Install Windows From a Flash Drive 410_210 How to Install Windows From a Flash Drive 410_310 How to Install Windows From a Flash Drive 410_410

Navigate to the USBprep folder in C:\ and double click the usb_prep8.cmd file (yours may or may not have the .cmd extension based on the Windows settings you are using. You can enable file extensions by clicking Tools, Folder Options, View tab, then unticking "Hide extensions for known file types" in the Advanced Settings list).

Clicking usb_prep8.cmd opens up the black and white command screen you see above. Follow the directions on-screen by clicking any button and you will be greeted with another window, PeToUSB. If you have your flash drive plugged in, the program should detect it and list it under the destination drive.

Click "Start" in the PeToUSB window, select "Yes" to continue then again click "Yes" when it asks if you are sure you want to repartition and format the disk. Once complete, click "Ok".

Leave all of these windows open and go to "Start", then "Run" and type in "cmd" to bring up the console window.

Type "cd c:\", without the quotes and press Enter.

Now type "bootsect /nt52 M:", without the quotes. In this example, "M" represents the letter of my flash drive. Yours will likely be different so be sure to check beforehand (it should be listed beside your device name in PeToUSB - if not there, simply double click My Computer on your desktop and locate the drive letter there.) then press Enter.

The command window will inform you that Bootcode was successfully updated on all target volumes.

Now, close out of the current command window and also close PeToUSB. Doing this will bring up a new set of options in the original command window, as seen above.

Press "1" then Enter and you will be asked to browse to the folder that you copied Windows to. Select the folder then click "OK".

Click back on the command window and press "2" then Enter. You will be asked to enter a drive letter that is not already taken. You may want to check in My Computer to be sure you select a letter that isn't already being used. In the screenshot above, I selected "O". Press Enter after selecting your drive letter of choice.

Press "3" then Enter and you will be asked for the drive letter of your flash drive. This is the same letter that you used earlier in bootsect. For me, that letter is "M". Input the letter and press Enter.

How to Install Windows From a Flash Drive 410_9 How to Install Windows From a Flash Drive 410_10How to Install Windows From a Flash Drive 410_11

Finally, press "4" then Enter. You will be asked if you want to proceed with the format. Type "Y" then press Enter.

The system will pause a moment while the format takes place. Then you will be asked to press any key to continue... do so. This starts the first phase of the process which will take a few minutes.

Once again, you will be prompted to press any key to continue... do so. Another dialog box will pop up, asking you if you want to start the file copy. Click "Yes". The command window will again activate and start copying files to the flash drive which will take a few minutes.

How to Install Windows From a Flash Drive 410_12How to Install Windows From a Flash Drive 410_13

After a bit, you will be asked if you would like USB-stick to be Preferred Boot Drive. Click "Yes".

Finally, a dialog box asks if you would like to unmount the Virtual Drive. Click "Yes".

That's it, you are done! You can close the command window and any other relevant windows that may still be open.

But, we are not done. Now comes time to install XP, which as you will find out, is a bit of a different process when using a flash drive. Continue ahead as we walk through this procedure.

Installing XP

Once you have your flash drive loaded with XP, it's time to install it. As mentioned earlier, you need to be sure that your computer supports booting from a USB drive.

How to Install Windows From a Flash Drive 410_14

Plug in the flash drive then turn on the computer and go into the BIOS (usually by pressing the Delete key at the POST screen). In the BIOS, you will need to set the flash drive as the first boot device, usually called something like "USB Hard Drive". Save and exit to reboot the system.

How to Install Windows From a Flash Drive 410_15

You will be greeted with the screen you see above which gives you two options: TXT mode or GUI mode. Select TXT mode for now.

How to Install Windows From a Flash Drive 410_16

Setup will load as normal, but there is one catch that you need to be aware of here. If you are formatting your hard drive and creating a new partition, you will need to turn off the computer immediately after the partition has been formatted (before Windows starts copying files over). Turn the system back on, boot back into TXT mode then direct Windows to leave the current file system intact. This is done because the flash drive can't copy to the new partition unless the computer is restarted and the flash drive is allowed to recognize the new partition. Strange, yes, but that's just how it works. If you aren't creating a new partition, then just carry on as usual.

How to Install Windows From a Flash Drive 410_17

Once all of the setup files are loaded, the computer will reboot. This time, select GUI mode and continue your installation as you normally would with a CD. It is important that you don't remove the flash drive until you are totally finished with the installation or you may corrupt the install and have to start over again.

How to Install Windows From a Flash Drive 410_18

This guide should allow you to quickly and easily install Windows XP on a computer without an optical drive such as a netbook. You can, however, use this method on any computer to speed up the installation process, as it is much faster to install from a flash drive versus an optical drive.

I did this and ran into both of these problems. Here are the solutions I found:
koolvikas - Your bootsect file is probably not directly in the C:. Make sure it is directly in the C drive and try again (C:\BootSect.exe)
zahidrocks - You probably don't have administrator permissions (this happens on windows vista and 7). Open notepad, type the following (without quotes): "net user administrator /active:yes". Save it as ADMIN.bat (the .bat is very imporant), right click, and select run as administrator. Log off and the administrator account should be available. Default settings has no password. (To deactivate the account, do the same, but change the yes to a no in the text document)
Hope this helps :smile2:

After spending a lot of time trying to get this process (install Windows XP from USB Flash drive) working I found a much easier, quicker, solution. It's called WinToFlash.

http://wintoflash.com

This is an easy way to make Windows XP bootable from a USB Flash drive. (Seriously, easy!)

Optionally you can follow these nLite tutorials to remove unnecessary Windows files before installing Windows:

I just finished doing this on my Asus 1001p netbook, after removing Windows 7 Starter (which consumed over 500MB of the 1Gig of memory.)

I decided to opt for installing Windows XP via a USB Flash drive. I didn't have an external DVD drive available. After following various complicated tutorials (which never did fully work for me) I found a very simple way to take the resulting Windows install files created by nLite (or copied from your Windows install disc) and create a bootable Flash drive: WinToFlash ( http://wintoflash.com ).

With WinToFlash all you need to have is a Folder on your PC containing all the Windows install files. Then you just open WinToFlash, tell it where your Windows install files directory is, then tell it what letter your Flash drive is (i.e. J: ). It does the rest for you. SIMPLE Smile... Once it's done boot from the flash drive on your netbook (or PC you want to install this copy of Windows on).

When I first tried this I was getting bsod (blue screen of death) errors when Windows setup was starting. (The problem was not with WinToFlash) After doing some research online I decided it might be due to some corrupt files (the XP disc I copied files from was too scratched up)... so I located another disc and went through the nLite process again (was easy because it saved my previous settings)... then did the WinToFlash process again. This time Windows XP installed without a problem from my USB Flash drive! (much easier than the tutorials that wanted me to accomplish this with 3+ programs and never worked)

The best thing about this is:

- My Windows install was only 270MB (with all Asus 1001p driver integrated and non-essential windows XP stuff removed, thanks to the nLite tutorial)

- Bootup to XP is fast (less than 30 seconds)

- Memory usage is at less than 200 MB! smile even after installing a bunch of programs (disabled non-essential startup processes).

- No CD/DVD drive necessary for installation.

This creates a virtual CD which will boot on almost any netbook.
The CD is perfect in every way. This will also work with any other OS (As long as your flash drive can hold it)

First of all, thanks to the OP for putting this together.

@vk_2009:
I haven't tried yet, but it appears you should only exit setup and restart IF you create a new partition (despite the way the OP phrased it).

If you want to be sure, just exit and restart the setup after you formatted, it won't do any harm.

EDIT: Didn't look to the post age before replying, but the advise is still valid for anyone with the same doubt.

You don't need any tools for creating a bootable usb. Just use the command line.

http://www.bootdisk.com/pendrive.htm

Just read that and you'll be done in no time. I've found winflash and other similar tools not workable.

Note: Just because you have a usb port doesn't mean you can boot from a usb. Most computers these days can, but some older ones bios don't support this. If you can't boot from it, try upgrading your bios from your manufacturers site.

This topic is NOT about creating a bootable USB pendrive. Please don't confuse the readers more than they already could be.

This is about installing Windows XP from a bootable USB drive (whether they are flash drives or otherwise). That is something you will not achieve simply by making a bootable USB drive and then copying Windows setup files. In order to actually install Windows the setup files must be modified and there are several ways to achieve that; this topic simply explains one of those.

Besides that, if you'd like to make a bootable drive or a drive with several bootable disk images, then the tools at PendriveLinux.com are much better than any of the methods listed in Bootdisk.com.

USB pendrives are the same thing as flash drives. Just a different name. You should know as you provided a link for creating a bootable linux pendrive/usb. Please keep calm as I was only posting what I thought was helpful.

That is what I posted. Look at Method 6. That tells you exactly how to do it. I followed that exact thing and created a Windows Server 2008 R2 bootable usb where I can install it from. Similar to a dvd. That it is how I installed my OS.

I'm not sure on why you need to modify the setup file. That is not required and could be consider piracy. Only things that should be modified are the .ini files if you are doing a slimstream for SQL Server 2008 or similar programs that support this.

I was perfectly calm as I wrote my reply. The same way as you considered what you posted to be helpful, I considered it not to be.

From my own post:
This is about installing Windows XP from a bootable USB drive (whether they are flash drives or otherwise)

I clearly stated USB drive there, not pendrive, as I thought it would be enough for you to realize that this method (as most others) work perfectly with external USB HDDs. Apparently, it wasn't clear enough, sorry about that.

From Bootdisk.com, method 6:
Note that this bootable USB guide will not work if you are trying to make a bootable USB on XP computer.

And neither will it work if you are trying to make a bootable USB drive to install Windows XP, no matter what bootsector you install to the drive.

It is not required to modify the content of the setup files, and I did not claim that. The setup files as a whole must be modified (directory structures and whatnot), in the same way that nlite and many other tools do in different ways for different purposes, all of which are perfectly legal.

If you take a quick look at a search on Google you will see that it's not as easy as you think it is.

Sorry, I don't think we were on the same page. I didn't see a mention of this being done on xp anywhere other then for an xp bootable usb. I wasn't aware of this not being possible for an xp installation. Now if this were for new os's like a vista/7 or above bootable usb it probably would work.

My apologies, there was some confusion there.Smile...
