Hi, I've been having issues with my browser ever since I installed Chrome from Google. My browser (IE and Firefox) would sometimes work when I reboot, but only for a moment, then it would simply act as though I wasn't connected to the internet. After a few minutes though, it will work normally again, but only momentarily.

I tried using WinSock and the solution provided on this thread: http://www.geekpolice.net/internet-networking-f8/im-connected-but-cant-view-websites-t10552.htm but, that didn't work either. I did a system restore, scanned my PC with Spybot and AVG Anti-Virus, but that didn't work either. I've also uninstalled Chrome. No luck either.

Edit: Also, I have encountered an 'AntiVirus System Pro' virus a day or so before installing Chrome, but I bypassed it with a system restore. Not sure if that has any relevance.

Hello.
Make sure no proxy is set.

Remove the Proxy setting in Internet Explorer and/or in FireFox.

    In Internet Explorer
  1. Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.

    In Firefox
  1. Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection > Choose "No Proxy"
  2. Click the apply button and restart that computer in normal mode.


Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • When Hijack This opens, click "Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Then select "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on "Save List..." (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs.

    µTorrent
    BitComet 1.09
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6
    Viewpoint Media Player

Programs removed, but the problem still remain. However I noticed that when my browser is 'down' I am able to access google via typing in the IP address, but not thru http://www.google.ca. Also, I am able to search just fine on google, but when I click on any link, I get the "Server not found" error.

Another thing I forgot to mention; I was refreshing rapidly via f5 on Chrome, for a good amount of time before this problem started appearing.

Edit: I am no longer able to search on google during my browser downtimes.
Edit2: Apparently the problem went away when I changed the DNS server address provided by my ISP (Sympatico) to an OpenDNS server address.

Anyway, it seems that my problem isn't caused by malware, so I apologize for that. I did however learn a few things by visiting GeekPolice though. So thanks for that! Thank You!

Ah, just a bad DNS then? OpenDNS is usually quite stable. Smile...
