Hi, thanks for your help, my laptop picked up some kind of virus or trojan; suddenly I began getting alerts from Windows Antivirus Pro, which I had never seen before, and my McAffee AV program popped up with Trojan detection notices. I ran the McAffee, but when I rebooted, the Windows logon screen immediately began logging me off as soon as I entered my password. And, it does the same thing when I try to boot in safe mode; immediate log off, therefore, no operating system functioning. Also, I tried booting the "last known good configuration" but no improvement. Help! How can I restore operating system access so I can follow your further likely instructions? I have Windows XP with SP3. I also have the XP installation disk with SP2 already on it. Thanks for helping.

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

I would do as you say, but I can't download or install anything; no functioning Windows XP due to immediate logoff problem. How can I get Windows to function enough to download, install, and run Hijack This?

Last resort would be a boot disc, otherwise format, the malware has pretty much disabled everything.

Please download this file: Avira Rescue Disc

  1. Insert a black CD into your CD draw.
  2. Double click the rescuecd.exe file on your Desktop.
  3. Hit the "Burn CD" button and allow it to burn, it shouldn't take too long.
  4. Next, reboot your computer, keep the CD inside the draw.
  5. Your computer should boot from the CD and boot to the Avira rescue disc.
  6. Next, see this guide here: How to use the boot disc
Let me know how it goes.

I had to do a repair re-install of Windows XP SP-2, so I am able to boot now, but with much malware pop-ups and badly functioning graphics. I ran the Avira rescue boot disk and it reported no viruses. Here is the result of running Hijack This:

Hello.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-842925246-630328440-839522115-1003\..\Run: [system tool] C:\Program Files\mggjuv\vjfrsysguard.exe (User 'Theodore Rigley')

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.
