virus that pops an "opens with" box for everything

I am running xp sp 2 and every thing I try to open I get a box that pops up and asks me what program I want to use. I cannot access my avg, malware, control panel etc.. I have tried to do this in safe mode, same results, also tried to do a system restore but it won't let me open even in safe mode. I can access the web and tried to down load hijackthis to be able to post a log because that seems to be the usual helpful tool that you guys use, but I get the same thing. I have downloaded it but cannot open it. I am not sure which virus this is. I thought maybe this was the system security virus, but I am not sure and I tried looking in my processes and don't see it and did a search but didn't find it. Those seem to be about the only things I can access. Do you have any idea which one it is and how to remove it?

Right click on THIS LINK on select "Save target as..." to save the .reg file.

Save it to your Desktop, then run it. Select yes to the registry merge prompt.
See if you can run files now.

Thanks for the link and info. I followed the link and was able to open my arsonal of malware, antivirus, reg cleaners and get rid of the problems.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  

Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

I already had malwarebyts installed but it wouldn't open, so i deleted the one I had and downloaded it again from here and installed and try to open, but it wouldn't. I have tried to download, install and open 3 times no luck

  2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

  4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  5. Close any open browsers.
  6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

• Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  
• Follow the prompts. NOTE:
