Hi and thanks in advance for any and all help,

I currently have internet and can log into applications and programs such as AIM and EVE Online, etc but I cannot browse the internet. I have a few other computers in the house and I can browse on them just fine and there is a router and modem setup, however I had disconnected everything and plugged the computer in question directly into the modem and I am still unable to browse.

I have tried resting the winsock and even running the Winsock XP Fix but I've not been able to browse. I'm thinking that it might be malware and will follow this post with a HijackThis log.

Hello.
Did you set this?

O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\Opening Page.bmp

I see you have Viewpoint software installed.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". Read this article: here and here

I suggest you remove the program now.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint Manager (remove only)
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar

Let me know about the O24 item.

I've removed Viewpoint Media Player and I'm still having the same problem. The media player was the only viewpoint in my system. About item O24, I don't know why it's coming up on the log but its a document from Photoshop. In the meantime should I add any other information to this in order to hopefully fix this without doing a format?

EDIT: After removing the Viewpoint Media Player and restarting I'm now left without a Connection-Specific DNS Suffix in my ipconfig.

Prior to losing that I was able to get into a web browser, only momentarily right at start-up. Don't know if this means anything.

EDIT-2: I flushed the DNS and got the Connection-Specific DNS Suffix back but there is still no ability to browse. Can get in messengers and games, but no browsing.

One step ahead of you here. Tried that and the program canceled out. Ran it in safe mode found one issue in a cookie. Tried to run it again normally and canceled again.

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

Have internet but can't browse CF_download_FF

Have internet but can't browse CF_download_rename

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV. (Trend Micro)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

Have internet but can't browse Rcauto10

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

Have internet but can't browse Whatne10

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
