I unknowingly infected my PC with 'Personal Antivirus' and haven't been able to remove it. I have tried the several anti-virus and spy-ware programs that I use to rid my computer of this incredible menace, but have had no luck what so ever in doing so. I've done a dozen searches to fine out just what this program is and does and how to get rid of it, but to this point nothing has worked.
In my searching, I was lucky enough to come across your site and after reading some of the posts, I decided to register in hope that you my be able to help me remove this (how can I put it ?) piece of garbage that has infected my PC.
Please forgive me if I don't respond right away. It's really late here as I have been up very late trying to figure out how to solve this problem and I won't be able to respond back till later tonight.
Thanks in advance for any help that you can give me....

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

Download the GMER rootkit scan from here: GMER

  1. Unzip it and start GMER.
  2. Click the >>> tab and then click the Scan button.
  3. Once done, click the Copy button.
  4. This will copy the results to your clipboard.
  5. Paste the results in your next reply.
Note:
If you're having problems with running GMER.exe, try it in safe mode. This tools works in safe mode.
You can also try renaming it since some malware blocks GMER.

Ran it both in and out of safe mode....not sure if it ran correctly....I saved it several times but GMER didn't show any results, though I did see the program running...Took a screen shot after it finished scanning....This was the result. You can also see where Personal Antivirus is on the lower right corner of my task bar. Can't remove it and keeps flashing messages that my computer is infected.

I see, please do the following:

1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

* Tools->Options->Main tab
* Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

Personal Antivirus CF_download_FF

Personal Antivirus CF_download_rename

3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
5. Close any open browsers.
6. We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.

  • See HERE for how to disable your AV. (Mcafee)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***
  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouse click combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Shortly after I installed and ran 'GMER' and posted the screen shot above of the results and then went into my task bar and start menu and clicked on the Notification Area tab to check the icons listed in current items, I noticed something.
The icon for 'Personal Antivirus' was listed and I clicked on the where it gave the option to show, hide or hide when inactive and I selected hide. The icon for PAV in the task bar then disappeared and the false warning that my PC was infected stopped.
I Just went back into the task bar and start menu to check the current icons that were listed in the notification area and 'Personal Antivirus was gone, I haven't received any more warnings about infections since.
Now my question is, could this have anything to do when I ran GMER ? Is the function of this program to eliminate infectious programs such as 'Personal Antivirus ?...and do you recommend I still install and run ComboFix as a precaution, or just leave things as they are now ?

Thxx again for your help ......... Honored

Hello.
Don't run Combofix, it won't run under 64 bit.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

Started up PC...Rouge : Personal Antivirus seems nowhere to be found. I'm not getting any pop-up warnings about infections on computer and the PAV icon has disappeared and not returned since installing and running Malwarebytes. All seems good.

Is there anything else I should do or check to make sure this problem is gone for good ? Also, if this thing somehow returns, should I contact you guys first before running any of these programs used to get rid of this ?

Again, I want to thank you for helping me find a solution to fix this problem...... Thank You!
