HP Scanner Scanjet 3970 Script Errors

The software for my scanner has a program "HP Director" which allows me to operate all of my HP devices from one location. You can check ink levels, do updates, set preferences, etc. The other day I was having trouble with my scanner. After trying several recommendations, I uninstalled/reinstalled the scanner, That is when I lost the use of HP Director. When I select HP Director I get a Script Error: Line 146 Char 5 wich is followed by another script error: Line 99 Char 5. Both are "unspecified Code 0". I have tried a clean install and a patch recommended by HP. After uninstalling the software which included deleting Hewlett Packard/HP from the registry and Program folders, then I had a problem reinstalling the software. I got an error code 2343. I used System Restore to go back before the uninstall. Any help on this will be appreciated. Windows XP Home SP3. :hmm:

Try this first, delete the Digital Imaging folder located at:

Program Files\Hewlett-Packard

If unable to complete any of the steps below, restarted the computer system before trying them again.


Now, to uninstall and reinstall the HP Photo and Imaging software.

Disconnect the USB cable from the scanner.

Open the Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs. From the list of installed programs, click HP Photo and Imaging and click Remove.

Follow the prompts to fully remove the scanning software and restart your computer. Insert the scanner installation CD and follow the prompts to completely reinstall the scanning software. After that connect the USB cable to back the scanner.

If it still doesn't work, we have to remove the HP Photo and Imaging installation values from the Windows registry. But before you have to back it up, read on how to do it here:

After that is done, Start >> Run >> regedit.
Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products. Click the first key under Products to highlight it.

On the right side of the screen, locate the ProductName line If this is the product with the install/uninstall error, delete it. If this is not the product with the error, click the second key under Products and check the Product Name. Continue until the key for the proper product has been identified and deleted.

After that, close the Registry Editor and return to the Windows Desktop.

The first procedure didn't solve the problem. On the second procedure, after deleting the software from the registry and deleting the Digital Imaging folder in the Program Files/Hewlett Packard, the software doesn't show up in Add/Remove programs to delete it. If I restart the computer and try to install the software it won't install. I tied this twice with the same results. Am I doing something wrong?

I now have the software installed. I still have the script errors when opening HP Director. I wonder if the problem could be in my OS SP3?

Are you using the latest version of HP Director?

Yes. Photo & Imaging 2.2. There are no updates available.

The Script Error path is "C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bbfe\Director\Director2.htm". I noticed the Director folder has a Director.htm and a Director2.htm file. Could this be the problem?

After months of looking I accidently came upon a fix. This fix is not about HP Director, rather, Resolving USB Scanner Initialization And Related Communication Error Messages. I finally got HP Director back, fully functioning. I have seen a lot of frustration out there on this issue.
