While surfing the internet a scan program seemed to take over . Using task manager I could close it but it would reappear. From then on I could not get to sites I entered or used search engines for. I am running XP on this laptop. I can no longer connect to internet but outlook is still working.

If outlook still work and receives mail, then the internet still work, just something is blocking Internet Explorer.

Do you have another browser (Firefox/Opera) you could install and see if that works?

2GB should do, these tools we use are all packed into one executable and they are very small file size.

Good.
Lets start with a Hijack This log.

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

Hello.
Is the rundll error message happening at startup? because there's something running at startup that uses rundll32.exe to launch itself. It's the Vista welcome message.
There is also some nvidia stuff too using rundll32.exe

Let me know if the error is at startup.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.
  • Select the first option where it says "This release includes the highly anticipated...".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    - Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Please make sure the new version of Java is installed before you run JavaRa.

Please download JavaRa from here

  • First, unzip it.
  • Then run JavaRa. (If you are running Vista, you will need to right click JavaRa > select "Run as administrator")
  • Select English from the drop down menu and press Select.
  • This will open JavaRa.
  • Press Remove older versions
  • Press yes to the prompt.
  • It will make a log file of what it's removed.
  • Copy and paste the log back here.

Please forgive but I am confused I'm doing all this on my working POC how does this relate to the problem on my laptop?

descriptionrundll error now cannot connect to ISP EmptyRe: rundll error now cannot connect to ISP

more_horiz
The error is happening on the laptop??

From the Hijack This lines I bolded for you, this file is showing:
C:\Windows\system32\NvMcTray.dll

It also has rundll32 in it's run value, and if the file isn't present on the laptop, it causes that error.

The Java I have pointed out because I saw this:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\ssv.dll

The part I have made in bold text shows shows Java version 6 update 1, we are now at Java 6 update 13.
Just a security vulnerability, malware can abuse old versions of Java and that hole needs to be closed.

Yes it is on the laptop and I cant get on line with it . I havent done anything with the usb stick Was I suppose to download Hijack to the USB stick and then to the laptop? I don't mean to be this dense. All the data you are seein is from my PC running Vista

Ah. Ignore my Hijack This instructions from that post.
Use the memory stick to transfer Hijack This to the laptop, then install it and get a new Hijack This log from the laptop.

Post the laptops log back here.

Hello.
Download the installer to the Desktop.
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe

Then open goto Start > My Computer. Open My Computer, then double click on the whatever drive the USB stick is.
Once the USB drive is open, drag and drop the installer onto the drive so it makes a copy. Take the USB stick out of the working machine and into the laptop.
Now do the same again, but drag and drop the installer from the memory stick to the laptops Desktop.

Now double click and run the installer.
Once it opens, get a system scan logfile. Smile...

Any Ideas???

Hello.
Yeah, I see the problem.
We'll use Malware-Bytes Anti-Malware (MBAM), so you'll need to transfer the installer to the laptop via the USB again.

The infection appears to be Koobface, an infection spreading through Facebook. Be careful surfing around Facebook, social networking sites are too dangerous.

Lets see if we can clean this up.

I see you have Viewpoint Manager, this is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". See here and here for more info.

I suggest you remove the program now.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar
Then please find and delete this folder in bold (if present):
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

  • Then open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=localhost:7171
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local;
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pp] C:\windows\pp05.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sysfbtray] c:\windows\freddy39.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [dll] rundll32 dll32,sm

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

Add/remove programs can be accessed this way.
Press Start > Run. In the Run box, type in appwiz.cpl and hit enter.

Does that load the add/remove programs?

Almost there, I downloaded the MBAM and thought I copied it to USB stick but I get a run time error '0' when I try to open it on laptop

So does MBAM not want to work?

Rename the installer, see if it will install once it's renamed.

Hmm.
After you did the Hijack This fix, see if you can get internet access, because the problem was that the malware set a proxy setting. Hijack This should of removed that if you did the Hijack This fix.

If you can get internet access, see if you can download it from the laptop without using the USB stick.

Above please find Mbam log sent directly from laptop . Thank you so much!!
When you were talking about updating Java that was from the log I sent from my PC? Should I do that now?

Hello.
The updating Java was for the other Vista machine.
I think MBAM probably got most of it now, but I'd like to take one last look around to make sure MBAM didn't miss anything.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
  • Double click DDS.scr to run
  • When complete, DDS.txt will open.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

Yep, that's the right one. There's a few files left MBAM didn't get.

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.

  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Copy the bolded text below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :files
    c:\windows\9g234sdff3d23dfgjf23
    c:\windows\system32\nfr.gpref
    c:\windows\system32\nfr.assembly
    c:\windows\9g234sdfdfgjf23
    c:\windows\f23567.dat

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste instructions for items to be Moved" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please post the OTMoveIt log.
