Hello everyone! I'm looking for help removing the ZafiB trojan from my daughter's laptop. She's enrolled in online school and has somehow managed to get this trojan... which has caused annoying pop-ups for a couple of days and now will not allow her to go online as of this morning. *sigh* Sad tearing

I've been reading up on this fourm this morning, and I did just use Highjack This (results below) to scan her system. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated! Thanks SO much in advance!

Hello.
Before we can start cleaning this, you and your daughter needs to know this.
For this online school, this machine is set to trust this website for the online school. So if they send anything, good or not, the machine will accept instantly without alerting you. I don't know if they have done this or your daughter has set the machine to trust it, but I would be careful.

Now we can start cleaning.

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Please make sure Teatimer is disable before we do this, otherwise this fix will fail.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

Thank you SO much, Belahzur! I've taken all the steps you requested, and I am now scanning with the Malwarebytes' software. I will post the results ASAP.

So, since my daughter's school program is trusting this trojan... even McAfee wont be able to stop it if we clean it and they send something? And also, do you have any clue how she got this onto her pc? Is it an email thing, or a website thing - or does anyone know for sure? Thanks again so much! Be back in a minute.

The websites are no longer in trusted zone when you did the Hijack This fix.
I'm not sure how it's spreading because it's vundo, there's no way to really trace it, because the files are randomly named.

I gotcha. Wow, some mean people out there. Sad tearing

Still scanning...

OK, once the scan was complete, I made sure all boxes were checked (over 30) and I clicked "Remove Selected". The window vanished and it's been showing just her desktop for the last 9-10 minutes. Is this normal? Sorry for all the questions, I am very new to this - and just want to be sure I'm doing this correctly.

No, it shouldn't just vanish. Let me think
Can you re-open the program and look under the logs tab to see if there is a log there?

No log at all. Should I try again?

Yes.
If it closes again, we'll try something else.

Yep, that's correct.
How is the machine now?

It seems to be working perfectly now! Thank You!

Thank you SO MUCH, Belahzar! I cannot possibly thank you enough!

Hooray! Hopefully we'll be rid of that for good. She says she's been careful with the PC, but she's promised to be more aware and hopefully we wont run into this issue again.

If I can return the favor, PLMK. Your time and consideration is greatly appreciated!

I see you have Adobe Reader version 8 installed on this machine, this is old and has holes malware can use to abuse to re-infect you, so we need to close these holes.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Adobe Reader 8
Then download and install version 9 from here:
http://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/

Please re-enable TeaTimer now.

We need to make a new restore point.

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.
To turn on System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (To turn on System Restore), and then click OK.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.
The link can be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin

I've just followed the steps for System Restore and Tea Timer, and I've also enabled the Automatic Updates and installed the new updates to her PC. We have AA SE and SBS&D on both of our PC's, but I will download SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard in just a moment (to both) and instruct my daughter to use them every 4 weeks no matter what. We both have Firefox on our PC's, and we will make sure to get in the habit of using that browser mainly. I will look into the other information as well, and I just filled out your feedback form. Again, I cannot thank you enough. You've saved her computer. If I can send you a GC to Starbucks, or even PayPal you something, just please let me know! It'd be my pleasure! It's the very least I can do!

Thanks again and have a great evening!
