Windows Firewall says I have Win32.Zafi.B - HJT log attached

My iexplorer doesn't run properly (posting this from a different computer).
When I run msconfig the computer shuts down.

I ran HJT in safe mode so let me know if I need to run HJT not in safe mode.

How is the machine now?

Doing much better. Thank you so much! Another issue that I had before this happened was that i lost my active desktop. I click the button that says "Restore my Active Desktop" and it tells me the following:

Internet Explorer Script Error
An error has occurred in the script on this page.

it lists the file in the Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop.htt

I have Yes No buttons asking if I want to continue running scripts on this page?

Can you help with this?

Lets try something.

1. Open My Computer.
   
2. Go to Tools > Folder Options.
   
3. Select the View tab.
   
4. Scroll down to Hidden files and folders.
   
5. Select Show hidden files and folders.
   
6. Uncheck (untick) Hide extensions of known file types.
   
7. Uncheck (untick) Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
   
8. Click Yes when prompted.
   
9. Click OK.
   
10. Close My Computer.

Now navigate to and find this file in bold:
C:/Documents and Settings/[username]\Application Data/Microsoft/Internet Explorer\Desktop.htt

Rename it and add a .old extension onto it, so it's now called Desktop.htt.old

Now close down the window and right click anywhere on your desktop > Refresh

Nope same thing. The desktop refreshes and I still have the restore active desktop button.

Try changing the theme?
Right click anywhere on the desktop > Properties > Change the theme to Windows XP.

It was set to Modified Theme. I changed to Windows XP theme now the button is gone and I see that theme's wallpaper. Any way to get my desktop items back? Rename that one file back to what it was?

I've never really used active desktop, so my knowledge of active desktop is very limited, so you may have to bare with me.

We can start by doing this.

I see you have Adobe Reader version 8 installed on this machine, this is old and has holes malware can use to abuse to re-infect you, so we need to close these holes.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

• Adobe Reader 8
  

Then download and install version 9 from here:
http://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:

• Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.
  
• Select the first option where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11".
  
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
  
• In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
  - Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
  - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
  - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
  
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
  

Please make sure the new version of Java is installed before you run JavaRa.

Please download JavaRa from here

• First, unzip it.
  
• Then run JavaRa.
  
• Select English from the drop down menu and press Select.
  
• This will open JavaRa.
  
• Press Remove older versions
  
• Press yes to the prompt.
  
• It will make a log file of what it's removed.
  
• Copy and paste the log back here.

We need to make a new restore point.

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.
To turn on System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (To turn on System Restore), and then click OK.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers.

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:

I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.

My system restore point says (disabled by Group Policy)?

1. Click Start, Run and type GPEDIT.MSC
2. Navigate to this path:

• Computer Configuration
  
• Administrative Templates
  
• System
  
• System Restore

3. Set Turn off System Restore to Not Configured
4. Set Turn off Configuration to Not Configured
5. Close the GP editor.

After clicking OK, windows says that it can't find GPEDIT.MSC.

Try this.

• Now open a new notepad file.
  
• Input this into the notepad file:

  [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore]

• Double click fix.reg to run it.
  
• Select yes to the registry merge prompt.
  

Ok it successfully added to the registry but it still won't run the GPEDIT.MSC.

The reg fix wasn't ment to fix GPedit, if I remember correctly, XP home doesn't have gpedit, only the XP pro does.

Oh ok. Still can't change system restore settings. Humm.

Download SysResotePoint.exe from here:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/SysRestorePoint_v12.zip

Extract it and run it, it will make a system restore point automatically.
