Hi guys, I'm new here but have heard great things, I'm hoping you guys can help out.

It seems that my computer has been infected by malware (obviously). While browsing online, I opened a suspicious looking website at which point my computer seemed to get very busy doing something. Norton AV popped up quickly with one of those Real Time scan windows but it was blank and went away quickly. Since then I am not able to access certain websites (Symantec) and LiveUpdate doesn't work for me, it says it has problems connecting.

SpyBot will also not open, it pops up in Process Explorer (by Sysinternals) but won't load. I also downloaded MBAM but can't install it. It also seems to half way run but does not display anything.

I have tried running Norton AV with no results, but while looking through the history, I see that it has detected Backdoor.Tidserv!inf TDSS7ef1.tmp earlier today.

I have run hijackthis and the logs will follow.

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here, use the top links - combofix.exe
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

    Backdoor.Tidserv!inf TDSS7ef1.tmp Rcauto10

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

    Backdoor.Tidserv!inf TDSS7ef1.tmp Whatne10

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

I'm also trying to see if Windows Defender will find anything, I am skeptical about that though.

I have tried restarting in Safe Mode but I experience the same problems with accessing the web and not being able to run some programs.

When I try to access some websites, I will either get a message saying I am unable to (Google Chrome), or I get a pop up with a completely unrelated website (Firefox). IE seems to be the most useful.

Thanks in advance for the help.

P.S. Will try ComboFix.

Combofix should shift it.
If it refuses to download or run, we'll use something else.

ComboFix said that it wasn't able to download the Recovery Console, it proceeded without it. It also mentioned something about it being expired and it running in a different mode from normal, sorry, I don't remember the terms.

It's okay, the log gave me enough info to know what to do now.

  • Now open a new notepad file.
  • Input this into the notepad file:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{77eb7663-2742-11dd-83ea-000e351e3f91}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\TDSSserv.sys]

  • Save this as fix.reg, save it to your desktop.
  • Double click fix.reg to run it.
  • Select yes to the registry merge prompt.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: HERE.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Drivers to delete:
TDSSserv.sys

Files to delete:
C:\windows\system32\drivers\TDSSmqlt.sys
c:\windows\system32\2528A9EB63.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

I can't seem to be able to download that file. It tells me that the page cannot be displayed.

Also I noticed that sometimes a process called WLLoginProxy.exe starts up.

Thanks for the help so far.

That worked. I installed and executed avenger. When the computer was about to be done restarting, an error window popped up saying something could not be written, the computer then restarted by itself before I had the chance to finish reading the error window.

Once it started up again, Norton said it detected a Trojan Horse in C:\avenger\TDSSmqlt.sys, and one in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\TDSSXFUM.DLL. It said it Quarantined both files. I also tried running LiveUpdate and it now seems to have access to the internet without a problem.

The log file from avenger is as follows.

That's what it shows now. Does it seem like things are better?

This time it was able to install the Recovery Console, however it was not able to get the updated version, it said it would proceed with the current one, and that it did.

Thanks again for the help so far.

Hello.
The malware is gone now.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.
  • Select the first option where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    - Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Please make sure the new version of Java is installed before you run JavaRa.

Please download JavaRa from here

  • First, unzip it.
  • Then run JavaRa.
  • Select English from the drop down menu and press Select.
  • This will open JavaRa.
  • Press Remove older versions
  • Press yes to the prompt.
  • It will make a log file of what it's removed.
  • Copy and paste the log back here.

Thank you very much. Thank You! Bow or Thanks

How is GTA IV? I've been meaning to play it but have not found the time yet. I heard there were a lot of bugs in the PC ported version.

Does everything seem to be fine now? Or is there something else I'd need to do?

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
