No malware showing in that log.

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Please make sure Teatimer is disable before we do this, otherwise this fix will fail.

  • Next, open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Lets update Java.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.

  • Select the first option where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    - Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Please make sure the new version of Java is installed before you run JavaRa.

Please download JavaRa from here

  • First, unzip it.
  • Then run JavaRa.
  • Select English from the drop down menu and press Select.
  • This will open JavaRa.
  • Press Remove older versions
  • Press yes to the prompt.
  • It will make a log file of what it's removed.
  • Copy and paste the log back here.

Ok, will do.

Am I virus/problem free? What about that Bloodhound.Exploit.213 that Norton could not resolve?

I'll complete this Java update now--thanks!

What problems remain?

Ok, ran the ATF cleaner--seems to have eliminated some temps files, etc

How do I know if I have rid my PC of these issues? Another Norton scan?

descriptionBackdoor.tidserv!inf -- Big Trouble - Page 1 EmptyRe: Backdoor.tidserv!inf -- Big Trouble

I'm assuming that I still have that Bloodhound.Exploit.213 that Norton could not resolve?

So I suppose I did not have the full root kit after all...?

descriptionBackdoor.tidserv!inf -- Big Trouble - Page 1 EmptyRe: Backdoor.tidserv!inf -- Big Trouble

more_horiz
Nope, you don't have the full rootkit.
You can check yourself to see if it's gone.

    To Unhide Files and folders:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Show hidden files and folders" option.
  • Hit the "Apply To All Folders" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Follow this path:
C:\Documents and Settings\admin\Local Settings\Temp

Open the temp folder and see what's in it.
There maybe some files left ATF-Cleaner couldn't delete, but leave them, your browser may need them.
Just make sure this file isn't there.
tdssde33.tmp

Try manually deleting it, if it won't die, let me know. Smile...

I got lost in the process of following that path (tdssde33.tmp)--

So I tried the search function--inputting the the file itself-- (tdssde33.tmp).

I went: documents and settings>administrator>local settings...then no option forTemp so I clicked Application Data--and then Application History--and figured I was lost...?

I think my instructions are wrong. Goofy
These work:

    To Unhide Files and folders:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Show hidden files and folders" option.
  • Hit the "Apply To All Folders" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

You should be able to see hidden files and folders now, they will have a faint look to them icon wise.

Would it be wise for me to now enable system restore (I disabled it before running the Norton System scan)?

descriptionBackdoor.tidserv!inf -- Big Trouble - Page 1 EmptyRe: Backdoor.tidserv!inf -- Big Trouble

Ah, good. The tdss file is gone. Smile...
Yes, you can enable it, this will also create a new restore point for you.

Rehide your hidden files by doing this.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:

  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Do not show hidden files and folders".
  • Press the "Apply to all folders" button.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

descriptionBackdoor.tidserv!inf -- Big Trouble - Page 1 EmptyRe: Backdoor.tidserv!inf -- Big Trouble

Luckily, the full tdssserv rootkit didn't get onto your machine, just a temp file of it.
I'm have to get offline now. If Norton picks up the bloodhound exploit, don't worry, it's not a major issue.

I'll probably be offline by the time Norton is done, so just post here and I'll see it tomorrow night. Smile...

Norton scan was clean--however I noticed these problems are now in quarantine--any need to delete them? They each indicate files and registry locations of affected areas. Are these files and registry entries still potentially problematic? Would it be helpful for you to see them?

I'll now reboot and turn ststem restore back on.

One more thing (sorry)--
In following the paths of the above file and registry locations (of my quarantined items) I did happen to come across a few more tdss files (in Windows\System32\ ). Are these TDSS files a threat? I have 3 of them in this folder. Anywhere else I ought to check?

Thanks--

Hello.
Just leftovers of the rootkit, the main driver for them isn't present otherwise you'd have more problems. Smile...

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

    Backdoor.tidserv!inf -- Big Trouble - Page 1 Whatnext

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Hello.
Can't see anymore problems from here.
I think the files you mentioned were in the quarantine folder, so they are not active and aren't a threat.
Delete everything inside the quarantine folder, and delete this folder too.

So we're done with the Combo Fix? I thought there was another step (as I've seen in other threads)?

CFScript? Nope, no need to in your case. I think TeaTimer may have stopped some files creeping in and protected you.
One last thing I want to remove from your registry, so please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

  • Now open a new notepad file.
  • Input this into the notepad file:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{ce75fd4c-3dec-11dc-82f7-98c4808f77e0}]

  • Save this as fix.reg, save it to your desktop.
  • Double click fix.reg to run it.
  • Select yes to the registry merge prompt.

Please re-enable TeaTimer. Smile...

What problems remain?

Ok, done!

Just curious now, did Norton actually remove the rootkit before you were able to see it in the Hijackthis log? Because you said that came back clean. I'm wondering why my PC was acting so unstable yesterday--it really seemed messed up--and now it seems ok. Whatever we removed (and however it was done) it seems to have worked.

I can't answer that question, only you really knows what happened. Norton may have removed or maybe TeaTimer just stopped it entering your system.
Either way, the rootkit is gone and your machine is cleaned up. I had you update Java on page 2, so I'm assuming you've done that now.

2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Everything looks great --- your HijackThis log appears to be clean. Smile...
Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
