Hopefully this article will help you resolve the problems you are having.

What Causes The Windows 0x8024200D Error?

Error 0x8024200D is a known Windows Update Agent Result Code:

Software Update Services (SUS) - Error 0x8024200D has a description of: SUS_E_UH_NEEDANOTHERDOWNLOAD.

Windows Update (WU) - Error 0x8024200D has a description of: WU_E_UH_ NEEDANOTHERDOWNLOAD

BOTH instances imply that the full set of files required for installation of your Service Pack have not downloaded to your computer, and so the Service Pack can NOT yet install.

This error message is not always as obvious as it first appears and you will need to troubleshoot in context of your circumstances. For instance you may be getting this error but NOT trying to install Vista SP1.

Hopefully these tips may help resolve the 0x8024200D error for you:

0x8024200D - Resolution Suggestion One:

In February 2008 Microsoft released 3 important patches for Windows Vista users, ALL are required before installing Windows Vista SP1.

If these are not installed, or have failed for some reason you may be getting error 0x8024200D. So check your Windows Update history for these (instructions below):

KB935509
which is a BitLocker update (Vista Enterprise and Vista Ultimate ONLY!!!)

KB937287
which is the servicing stack update (ALL Vista versions)

KB938371
which is a multi-component update (ALL Vista versions)

Please Note: KB938371 NEEDS to have been installed BEFORE KB935509 (the BitLocker update) is installed, if you are running Windows Vista Enterprise OR Windows Vista Ultimate systems has been installed! - Do not MANUALLY install KB935509 on a PC running Vista Home Basic and Vista Home Premium.

How To Check Update History:

On the Vista Start Menu select All Programs, then in the list of available programs select Windows Update from the list. Now in the new windows select View Update History from the left hand menu. You will now be shown a list of ALL the updates on your Vista PC. Check for those marked FAILED.

0x8024200D - Resolution Suggestion Two:

Download and install the entire Vista SP1 file, rather than from Windows Update.

0x8024200D - Resolution Suggestion Three:

If this error is happening when you are NOT trying to install Vista SP1, then look in Windows Update history and see if any have failed, try and manually download the file and install. Reboot and try Windows Update again.

Also check your WindowsUpdate.Log for any clues of "FAILURE" or "FATAL ERROR".

Location is at: %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log

Typically this will be: C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log

0x8024200D - Resolution Suggestion Four:

As a last resort, try deleting all files\folders in the: %windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder.

Typically this will be: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

Update may then fail again, but complete on another attempt!

...and that should have now resolved the 0x8024200D error for you!

If it doesn't, perform a In-Place upgrade (Repair install)

2. Insert the Windows Vista DVD in the computer's DVD drive.

3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate:

If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears. Click Install now.

If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps:

Note: Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive.

b. Click Install now.

4. When you reach the "Which type of installation do you want?" screen, click Upgrade to upgrade the current operating system to Windows Vista. Please make sure the edition of Windows Vista is selected correctly.
