I just received a call from someone claiming to be from MS alerting me to problems with my computer, viruses, warning messages etc. This caller gained access to my computer then showed me all my problems and wanted $300 to install remedial software.
i finally realized this was a scam but i'm afraid the 4 programs he installed might still be there.
What should i Do??

thank you in advance
john

Hello and welcome to GeekPolice.Net My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

I had a call from them about 3 weeks ago and we had a great chat until I told her I didn't have a computer. She said, "Oh my, I must have made a mistake and hung up.

I doesn't look like any harm programs were installed. Just a couple of warnings about these two progams
Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications and their potential for harming your OS far outweighs any small potential for improving your computer's performance.

There are a number of them available and some are more safe than others. Keep in mind that no two registry cleaners work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad" entry. One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause a problem when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work. Without research into what the registry entry selected for deletion is, a registry cleaner can end up being an automated method to cause problems with the registry.

For routine use by those not familiar with the registry, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

I see you are running Poker Stars. Poker Stars has a history of distributing spyware in their products. However, security experts still question this program as good or bad. I recommend to remove it to prevent spyware, but it is up to you to decide if you want to keep it.

If you would like to uninstall it, do so as follows:

Press Start, and navigate to the Control Panel. When in the control panel enter Add or Remove programs. Search for and locate PokerStars, and either click Change/Remove or Remove.

As you probably are aware at this time MS does not monitor personal computers and would certainly not ask for permission to gain access to the computer. Do you remember what you did to give him access to your computer? If so, go back and make sure that access is turned off.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Rootkit

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Rootkit and save it to your desktop.

  • Be sure to print out and follow the instructions provided on that same page for performing a scan.
  • Caution: This is a beta version so also read the disclaimer and back up all your data before using.
  • When the scan completes, click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats found and reboot the computer if prompted to do so.
  • Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
  • If there are problems with Internet access, Windows Update, Windows Firewall or other system issues, run the fixdamage tool located in the folder Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit was run from and reboot your computer.
  • Two files (mbar-log-YYYY-MM-DD, system-log.txt) will be created and saved within that same folder.
  • Copy and paste the contents of these two log files in your next reply.

Thanks SuperDave....I don't see Poker Stars on my programs list in Control Panel. I was not aware I ran Poker Stars. Another way to get rid of it?

The scammer instructed me to open the Run window and type eventvwr. there are 3 entries still on my run window that are from this episode. The other 2 are prefetch virus, www.teamviewer.com. When I reopened eventvwr to turn it off, I got another message, link to screen grab attached.

can the scammer still access my computer?

I don't see Poker Stars on my programs list in Control Panel. I was not aware I ran Poker Stars. Another way to get rid of it?

It's listed there in your installed program. You can look for it in your C drive under Program Files.
The scammer instructed me to open the Run window and type eventvwr. there are 3 entries still on my run window that are from this episode. The other 2 are prefetch virus, www.teamviewer.com. When I reopened eventvwr to turn it off, I got another message, link to screen grab attached.

can the scammer still access my computer?.

There should have been a password generated by your computer which would give him access to your computer. This was a one-time event and won't happen again unless you give permission for remote assistance again.

I notice that ESET is in my programs list in the control panel now. should i uninstall it?
Also in the list of programs installed yesterday was AntiLoggerSDK v1.7.6.367 published by Zemana Ltd. Was this part of the cleanup and should I uninstall it as well?
thanks

I thought the Antilogger was installed by yourself. You can uninstall both.

You should change your passwords. Also, check with your bank to see if they provide security such as Trusteer Rapport which protects your security while on-line with your bank or any other site you wish to be protected. You can find more information here.
