firewall disabled on boot cant run security programmes

Hi my flash drive isnt responding so I have burned the files to a writable cd can you advise me on the steps to take if there different from before.

We'll have to get the USB working. Disconnect the power supply to the computer for about 30 secs. and see if the USB will work now.

thye usb is not found on my sons lap top. It makes the sound when i plug it into the laptop but it's not showing i's a toshiba satelite c660

First of all try "System Restore" and try to find a Restore point previous to when you started having problems. If that doesn't work, do "system image recovery".

I managed to get into the recovery console.. I was told that this would set pc back to the settings from the manufacturer.

Then, your computer is back to the day it was purchased and there should be nothing else to do. Just make sure you have a good AV program installed.

ok, but I have tried this numerous times before with discs and I get the problems once I install windows updates. I have not installed windows updates therefore currently no issues. I am using kaspersky 2012 wich installs itself once I recover the pc.. what do you recommend I install instead.

If your subscription for Kas is still active I would recommend that you re-install it. Then, try your updates.

I wasn't too keen on downloading that again as it didnt detect any problems before .. so I have Avast now with a free trial of more security features.
