I can't get past step two. I started my computer is SAFE mode but it also asks me after that to choose one-
Windows Media console or
Windows recovery
I don't want to do anything that says recovery since to me that means erasing everything on my computer! What do I do in this case?

Also, when I try and download the program it will allow me to RUN it but nothing further. Even if I click it twice something comes up and says it's infected and I should run my spyware. I have Norton 360 and when I run it is states everything is great, but that MS removal tool is still there!

Thank You! thank you so much!
i got the MS Removal Tool about half an hour ago, and it said i had viruses, my Norton has recently expired and I havent renewed, but because i just noticed this "service" now, i was skeptical. i went to google on my ipod, and typed in ms removal tool, and went to the first page, which was a yahoo answers page asking how to remove it, and i saw even in the google suggestions that it was a virus, and the best answer was one with a link to this page, i followed the on screen instructions, and within 5 minutes of installing the program the virus was gone!
thank you guys so much!!

Just used MAM for ms removal tool malware & it worked like a charm, I've used it before (my kids know every privacy setting on Facebook but can't recognize bogus software to save their lives) so I was a convert quite some time ago; In the past, I would have done a restore to factory settings but MAM has saved me that aggravation twice now and the fact that its free is a bonus.

Thank you, used this tonight and it cleared the MS removal tool quickly, so very relieved.

more_horiz
So I finally got into Safe Mode, but the proxy server box was still not checked, so there's nothing to uncheck as instructed. Is this important. I ran the mbam file that I got from the link you posted here and I received a message that it was 113 days out of date. When I clicked 'Update', I got an error message:
Program_Error_Updating (12007,0,winHttpSendRequest)
The program did run in quick scan and identified 7 infected objects realted to MS Removal, which I removed. I also rebooted as instructed. But when I started up again, MS Removal was still there.
Then I ran a full scan, with the same error message, and it found 1 more infected object, which I removed.
But MS Removal is still there.
I sent the error message to Malwarbytes for comment.
Any help from this site possible ?

I've just completed the quick and then the full scan but the MS Removal Tool is still in place playing havoc. Do I continue to run the scans again until I get the 'restart your computer' box? Or is this just not working for me?

Thank you so much!! That is a seriously annoying, nasty virus.

Note: One of the top hits in Google to get rid of this thing is Spyware Doctor. It doesn't work.

Also note: My current, non-updated version of Malwarebytes didn't work on this thing, but updating it to the newest version took care of it right away.

Also a clarifying question that may help others (since I wasn't completely sure myself): I downloaded, installed, and ran Malwarebytes in Safe Mode with Networking. To me, the instructions given didn't really make a point of that. I did not download and then try to run it in normal mode. I assume this was correct since it worked. Smile...

Thank you for the absolutely perfect instructions. Within minutes the Windows 7 PC was up and running as normal. I have now purchased the registered "live" version. Brilliant Thank You!

descriptionRemove MS Removal Tool [Removal Guide] - Page 2 EmptyRe: Remove MS Removal Tool [Removal Guide]

Just wanted to say a big THANKS for these excellent instructions, which worked perfectly for me, and saved me a lot of hassle! Now that nasty's gone, I can backup my important files and rebuild from scratch. Thank You!

Just one thing to add - it seems to be important to log in as the user you were logged in as when you contracted the virus to run Malwarebytes. I initially tried to run Malwarebytes as Administrator, but it didn't find anything. I had to log out and log in again as my "usual" user, and only then did it find and remove the "MS Removal Tool"

Incidentally, it didn't seem to touch the HOSTS file or my proxy settings - all normal there - and it was only one file than needed to be removed. Can't Believe It But it seems to be gone.

Anyone know how this thing gets in? I haven't installed any new software for weeks.

I am in safe mode with networking but when I try to download the software a box comes up saying that my security settings don't allow this download Sad tearing
What do I do now?

*EDIT*

I downloaded the malware software from another comp onto my USB and installed it that way in safe mode, you have to be connected to the net for the malware to update otherwise it doesn't recognise the MS Removal Tool...

Thanks for all the help GeekPolice Big Grin

Excellent instructions! They helped me remove this rogue and gain full system access about 15 minutes. Just an additional note to anyone else with the same problem. I ran Malwarebytes a second time after rebooting but this time as a Full System Scan. The second scan found a copy of the rogue hiding in my System Restore folder.

Now its completely gone.

Hi, my PC recently became infected with MS Removal Tool. I have tried Malwarebytes Anti Malware but because I cannot connect to the internet (even when in Safe Mode with Networking - I am unsure why, my USB device just does not connect) so the anti malware software cannot update. I then run the check and it comes up clear.

Are there any tricks to being able to connect to the internet (i have changed the internet proxy settings in explorer and firefox) - do I need to change network settings at all?

Im quite technologically challenged so any basic step by step advice would be so helpful.

Thanks

Malwarebytes AntiMalware was highly recommended to remove this virus. I scanned my computer in safe mode 3 times with MAM but did not get rid of the problem. Then I scanned with Super AntiSpyware in safe mode and the problem was solved.

I have done everything this guide has told me to do, and ms removal tool is still on my machine. I skimmed through the replies hoping to find out that I did something wrong, but apparently you want me to download more programs when your first one didn't even work. You aren't even replying to people who ask for help, yet can find time to say "Your welcome" to people who do get it to work. Color me skeptical on this, but it seems like you aren't very helpful at all.

Any ideas where this comes from? At least once a month I need to remove this (or the Antivirus 2010 virus) from a client's computer. The owner of the store spends all day looking at porn, but doesn't know enough to keep himself from getting infected. I have them set up with Microsoft Security Essentials, but that seems to be ineffective against this breed of malware. Any tips on preventing it from coming back? Thanks for the great post, btw.

I ran Hit Man Pro, then Malwarebytes, then Superantispyware. Each one nabbed a few of the viruses. It appears to no longer be on my computer, but all the icons on my desktop are missing. My wallpaper turned blue. All my programs and files are not visible. How do I fix this?

My computer is running XP.
