scannow says I need to insert my Windows XP CD but...

Hi - I use windows XP and my PC had been working OK. I installed Turbotax 2010, and it seemed to install ok but when I clicked the BEGIN button, it spun for about 10 seconds and then I got a pop up that said "Turbotax has encountered an error and must close". I did some troubleshooting on the Turbotax site and it told me to go to the command prompt and type "sfc /scannow". I get a box that says something like "Checking Windows Protection", but then it keeps popping up with a message telling me to insert my Windows XP CD. The problem is, I can't find it. I'm sure I got it with my computer but I never used it and I can't find it. Is there anything I can do??

If you have the folder C:\I386 already copied onto your hard drive you can "tell" Windows File Protection that you have the files on your PC, however it involves editing the registry as described in the article I linked to:

.....Windows File Protection service constantly monitors for any changes to the main system files. Well Windows XP keeps a cache (copy) of these essential files at the following location:

C:WINDOWS\System32\Dllcache (assuming C: is your system root which it probably is.)

The dllcache folder is extremely important so Windows XP hides it from you! To view it go to: My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View > "uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.

But, if the Dllcache folder, or part of it, has become corrupted for some reason then you will be prompted for the XP CD - so your computer can get a clean copy!

Having said that not ALL installations of Windows XP have ALL the system files cached into this folder....

Is there a workaround YES!

....I like to have the I386 folder from the XP CD installed on the computer as well. (You can)...modify the registry to tell it the source path for these files... Why? Well not only does this prevent 99% of request for the the XP CD with Windows File Protection. But the I386 folder also contains many other files that are sometimes needed by the operating system and this stops those requests for the XP CD too!...

I don't think I have the I386. I found the dll cache folder, like the article said to do, but I don't see any I386. I went ahead and edited the registry to change it to C, rebooted and ran scannow again but it still asked for the CD. Does that mean I need the CD, with no other workaround? Or am I just not doing something right?

Dunno. Did you read the entire article and address all of the Other Problems with scannow sfc... section?
Again, this is moot if the C:\i386 folder does not exist and/or is corrupted. If so, you'll need the CD, or borrow one from someone you know. Also what service pack (SP2, SP3) are you running. You'll need a CD that contains the same service pack you have installed.

I changed the D to C, so it ends up being C:\, so I think that is correct.

I am not sure where to look for the C:\i386 folder. I think I do, but I am not sure and there are so many folders and files!

I did read the entire article but it seemed like without the i386 or CD, it didn't matter.

And I believe I have SP3.

Can you tell me where to check for i386 folder?

The I386 folder is directly under c: drive. Right click on My Computer then click on c: --if it's been copied to the hard drive you should see a list of folders including the i386 folder


To check your version of XP right-click My Computer>>select properties>>General Tab:

OK - I don't have the I386 folder, and I do have SP3. I'll see if I can get a CD tomorrow.

I am assuming you are installing the paid version. How did you install it? From a CD/DVD or did you download it to your hard drive and TRY to install it?

I'm confused. It either installed or it didn't. Is there any indication that the program did install ie, is Turbotax 2010 on your start menu or in Add/Remove programs in Control Panel, desktop icon, etc...? If so, it installed. If NOT, then that indicates a different problem. If so, you are reading the offered solution for Windows 7, and not XP. Running sfc /scannow in Windows 7 will fix this particular problem because .Net 3.5 is integrated into the Win 7 operating system and as such running sfc /scannow should correct any corrupt / missing .Net files REQUIRED by Turbotax to run. The instructions for XP are much different.

Let us know if what I'm assuming above is correct/incorrect, is Turbotax installed on your system or not, and if so, let us know what versions of .Net Framework you have installed. One other thing, is your system fully updated (Windows Updates)?

Hi - I do have the paid version. I have a CD, which is what I used first. It seemed to install OK. It asked me if I wanted to check for updates, which I did, and it got them OK. (I have used TT for many years). Then on the "dashboard", there is a button to click, labeled "BEGIN". That's when I encountered the problem. I did some troubleshooting and ended up calling TT Support. I talked to a guy who seemed fairly knowledgeable, but in the end, didn't resolve anything. He then sent me a download link, and told me to uninstall, then reinstall, and call back if I still had problems. I did all that and got the same error. I called back twice and got techs who were CLUELESS.

In step 3, it specially says for Windows XP. And that's as far as I got because scannow kept telling me I needed the disk.

At one point, I tried to reinstall the .netframework, but I honestly don't know what the heck I ended up doing. If I look in Add Remove Programs, I have: Microsoft .Net framework 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2, 3.5 SP1, 4 Client Profile, and 4 Extended. Is that bad??

And finally, yes, the system it is updated. I have automatic updates, and I checked anyway, somewhere along the way recently.

Forgive my ignorance, (I've only used the online version myself) but is this something you need to buy a new version of every year? Every 2 years? Did you use, or try to use this version prior to this year? The reason I ask is prior to to the 2009 version only .Net Framework 2.0 was required and if this is the first time you're using a version requiring 3.5, we can reasonably assume the problem is with .Net 3.5

That's where you need to be more specific. What EXACTLY did the error message say? Were there any error codes given? If so, what were they/it? I see two messages similar to what you posted:

"TurboTax engine has encountered a problem and must close"
"TurboTax installer has encountered a problem and needs to close--EventType: clr20r3 (or similar)"
These 2 errors while similar offer different solutions. You must give the PRECISE message and/or codes. I can't emphasize this enough.

That's not good. Try keeping a log and recording EXACTLY what steps you're taking.

No and yes. It's not bad if you have programs that need them--which you have--and it's not bad if you have all the security patchesfor them--which you say you have-- but it's bad if one of them is "broken"---which you apparently have.

Edit to add: What Anti-virus are you using & did you ever use any McAffee or Norton AV? Are you using a 3rd party firewall?
