fresh install of XP and no internet

Hi, I just finished installing windows xp yesterday and it seems like a good install but it wont allow me to connect to my network. It tells me I need drivers for my internet? I'm not very experienced in this area so if you could help me it would be great. Also out of curiosity, if i get my internet working is there a program I can use to check if my drivers for all my other hardware is good?

I really need help I need to get my internet working to activate my computer, update it and get virus security software. If you have anything that may help please tell me so I can try at least...
