wuauclt.exe infected, internet still working, programs work in safemode

My computer was recently infected with malware that keeps producing the error "wuauclt.exe infected"

I read on here about someone else with the same problem, but was advised not to use those instructions because they are specific for each person.

I am running Windows XP, and also have Symantec anti-virus protection.

I am running malwarebytes right now, hoping to find anything.

Please help. Thank you.

Download OTL by OldTimer to your Desktop.

• Close all windows and double click OTL.exe
  
• Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  
• It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  
• You may need to use two posts to get it all.

Second, I cannot find the Extras.txt on my desktop. I ran the scan in safe-mode because when I run it normal the virus pop-up window appears so often that it makes it difficult to get anything done. Would this affect the results at all?

No, I got what I needed, how follow my instructions in order, and do it in Safe Mode if needed.

Remove the Proxy setting in Internet Explorer and/or in FireFox.

In Internet Explorer

1. Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.
   

In Firefox

1. Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection > Choose "No Proxy"
   
2. Click the apply button and restart that computer in normal mode.
   

Please run OTL.exe.

• Copy the commands with file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

• Return to OTL, right click in the "Custom Scans/Fixes" window (under the light green bar) and choose Paste.

Okay, try this.

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

• Double click and run the installer.
  
• It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  
• After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  
• When Hijack This opens, click "Open the Misc Tools section"
  
• Then select "Open Uninstall Manager"
  
• Click on "Save List..." (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  
• Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.
  

I cannot install it because it says "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation."

How do I get around that? It should be noted that when I booted up in safe-mode, I am running under my own name and not through the administrator profile. Is that the difference?

I signed on under the administrator and it still would not let me install that...

I changed the settings on OTL and got the extras.Txt, would this help at all if I posted it?
