hi
i have the above virus infections and keep getting pop ups for antivirus software alert and also keep getting explorer trying to open up to some dodgy websites.

i run Windows XP.

I have tried the suggestions to help get you a log of the system data but have failed to do so and also the latest updates on MS and Java and Adobe but the .exe files are being blocked.

i did run safe mode and changed the LAN settings and i think that might have improved something but not sure what! i think it has stopped trying to open up to a website (cant remember name of it..but something to do with 2010...purchase...) will look this up if it helps!

i have Bitdefender total security 2009 but it seems to be suppressed by one or all of these viruses.

many thanks. Annoyed or Unimpress

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

HI Belahzur,
Thank you. I have a problem with even this bit.

I clicked onthe link and saved the file but when i clicked to run the program it flashed up very briefly (very briefly) on the screen and dissappeared. I tried opening the folder and double clicked on the installer package icon and this let the program start to install but it flashed very quickly to the agreement screen and disappeared as quick as it appeared!
what next please? The cursor does appear to be flashing on and off intermittently (the hourglass figure) which seems to be slowing down my postings!

Also would you like the exact details of the warnings coming up on my screen?

thanks

Lets try this instead/

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
  • Double click DDS.scr to run.
  • When complete, two logs will open. Save both of the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste BOTH LOGS back here, use more than one post if needed.

hi
Thank you Belahzur,
i have done that and the pc is running BEAUTIFULLY!
i ran pc clean up and defrag etc from Bitdefender and tidied up a few other bits. it runs great.
I am so very grateful to you for helping me with sorting this out and for giving me a better understanding of how this stuff beds itself in and what sort of things i should be looking for in future. If you have time could you answer me please......... was this virus as a result of someone looking at some "questionable" wesbites or could it have come through on an ordinary email?
I will post on other topics after i have made a donation to your generous site. These are fab sites and i recently managed to get a penalty notice ticket cancelled using a site not dissimilar to this set up. My sincere thanks.
I would have asked you to marry me i was so relieved to have my pc back...but i have just seen your profile picture and have changed my mind!!
do let me know if i have anything else to do here.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.
The link can be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin

Hi Jeff,
wow. Comprehensive!
Many thanks for these notes. I shall go through each one when i dont have an urgent job on (now!). I am just a little concerned about the compatibility with Bitdefender and so will do a little research into these as i am really happy with Bitdefender so far. I have it set up to do automatic updates and autoscans so i am not sure how it was over-ridden, but i will read up where your notes suggest.
I agree with Mozilla and thanks for the additional add-ons. good tips.
Update checker...will do.
yes Firewall...i need to read up. always meant to try and understand more but am so blooming busy. bed time reading!
of course. completing a feed back form would be my pleasure.
Your help has been thorough and informative. when i say my next one...i dont mean next viral infection i mean my next post about something else as i am already thinking about other issues i just havent had the chance to run through because of the lack of time and knowledge and this would be the ideal website for just such help. Nice to have good service for a change.
Merry Christmas.
Nalini
