Hi there, I'm new to the forum.

I installed Norton Internet Security on my Vista today, right after which my internet explorer started crashing and the NIS kept warning me about it having blocked a "w32.tidserv" Virus (but not removing it).

When I scan with NIS or malwarebytes, I get "no infections" on both counts. I did some further research and although I can see the "resycle" folder in ever one of my portable drives and a non deletable temp file in my temp folder. I couldn't find a clear notice of the virus in my services, nor registry.

I'd apreciate it if someone could remove this one

Anyhow, here's my logfile:

Hello.

Please plug in your external drives, they are likely infected.

1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

* Tools->Options->Main tab
* Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

2. During the download, rename Combofix to svchost as follows:

Can't remove w32.tidserv from Vista CF_download_FF

Can't remove w32.tidserv from Vista 2aflf5z

3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
5. Close any open browsers.
6. We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.

  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on svchost.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouse click combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Plug in your external drive, then run this.

Please download USBNoRisk to your Desktop and run it by double clicking the program's icon.

  1. Wait a couple of seconds for initial scan to finish.
  2. Connect all of your USB storage devices to the PC, one at a time, and keep each one connected at least for 10 seconds.
  3. If there are more USB storage devices to scan, please take a note about the order in which these were connected.
  4. After all the devices are scanned, right click in the Monitor tab, and choose "Save log". That will open the log in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log into this thread.
Explanation: USB storage devices are all the USB devices that get their own partition letter at connecting to the PC, e.g. flash drives (thumb/pen drives, USB sticks), external HDDs, MP3/MP4 players, digital cameras, memory cards (SD cards, Sony Memory Stick, MultiMedia Cards etc.), some mobile phones, some GPS navigation devices etc.

Wow, how many external drives do you have? 3 of them are infected, luckily, we can remove it.

I need to know which drivers were plugged in what letter, drive H, drive N, and drive S are infected. So far, the infection has been disabled, but the infection files are still there and need removing.

Let me know which drivers are which.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
4. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Avenger gave me the log together with a window "There is no disc in the station. Place a valid medium in station\Device\Harddisk3\DR3.
I hit retry once, got the same message. hit cancel and got another message for another harddisc and when I canceled that, got yet another.

from visual checks i found the following:
H: had no resycled folder nor a autorunfile
N: had no resycled folder nor a autorunfile
S: had no resycled folder, but still has a "autorun.inf.blocked" file
The temp files in Appdata/Local/Temp were no longer locked and deletable

Anyway, here is the logfile:

I wasn't getting messages anymore, but on my last scan I had a new infestation in my TMP folder. apparently one of the files had gotten stuck in the recycle bin while emptying it and started causing trouble from there.

Also picked up a few "Troyan.Alemod".

I've cleaned up everything and doing another scan.
Then I'll do another tomorrow and one in a few days.

Sad tearing

Hi again...

I thought everything was solved,
But a week or so ago I noticed that my bluetooth network had stopped working, I found my device mananager to be empty.

A few days ago, I started having intermitant problems with the connection of my wireless keyboard and mouse (and even my wired keyboard).

Finally today my scanner stopped working as well. A scanner which is part of a combi scanner/printer, of wich the printer still works.

Am I looking at a reinstall here, or is this still fixable? Sad tearing

Hello.
Lets see if we can fix the damage.

  • Now open a new notepad file.
  • Input this into the notepad file:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{74246bfc-4c96-11d0-abef-0020af6b0b7a}]
    @="Device Manager"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{74246bfc-4c96-11d0-abef-0020af6b0b7a}\InprocServer32]
    @="C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\devmgr.dll"
    "ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{74246bfc-4c96-11d0-abef-0020af6b0b7a}\ProgId]
    @="DevMgrSnapin.DevMgrSnapin.1"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{74246bfc-4c96-11d0-abef-0020af6b0b7a}\VersionIndependentProgId]
    @="DevMgrSnapin.DevMgrSnapin.1"

  • Save this as fix.reg, save it to your desktop.
  • Double click fix.reg to run it.
  • Select yes to the registry merge prompt.

Guess re-installing might be the only way out, no idea why hardware is failing.
