Virus causing alot of problems

Hi I seemed to have picked up an annoying and tricky virus. It seems to be changing my settings and stopping me from doing many things.

First of all it seems to have broken alot of .exe files. a small few of my games don't seem to work anymore and installers like AVG simply wont work - the error i get from the avg installer is: C:\Documents and Settings\Compac_Owner\Desktop\avg_free_stf_as_85_420a1708.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

It also broke .rar files but I somehow fȋxed that ( a mixture of messing around and reinstalling winrar)

It is stopping me from installing or running any virus scanners including online ones (most curiously it seems to block any website to do with virus scanning)
It won't allow me to use system restore (well it will do the system restore and then restart the pc and say it didn't work)
Another odd one is that it has stopped me from logging on xp with the normal way (the welcome screen with the user icons) and has changed to the classic username and password entry

Please download ComboFix from BleepingComputer.com

Rename ComboFix.exe to commy.exe before you save it to your Desktop

• Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools A guide to do this can be found here
  
• Click Start>Run then copy paste the following command into the Run box & click OK "%userprofile%\desktop\commy.exe" /stepdel
  
• As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  
• Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console

Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

• Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  
• When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
  

I would also like to see a list of installed programs, so please do this:
Click Start > Run then copy/paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

In your next reply, please include the ComboFix log and the Add-Remove Programs log.

Neither worked, when I tried to run Combofix an error would show up and automatically delete the program.

Hey I have another question.

I haven't gotten round to formatting my pc but I've run into a slight problem

I backed up my files onto my pen drive and external hard drives, seems i backed up some infected files (probably an exe file) onto my external harddrive so this now contains the virut (as I found out attempting to plug it in on my laptop which brought up 2 virus errors)

So, question one, my External Hard Drive contains all my media files and backed up files please tell me theres a way to save it and if not how the heck would i go about formatting it without getting a virus

Question two is the virus alerts appeared on my laptop as i plugged the hard drive in i imedietely disconnected my hard drive from my laptop, is there any chance it got effected (it's running normal with no side effects) just as a precaution.
