Just out of curiosity, when I installed ubuntu,I was not supposed to install it over windows was I? I chose the option, most continuous free space or something to that effect, now it says I dont have enough space to download avast.

No. It was to be merged in to a partition you would have created before installing it.

It would look like

Windows | Unallocated

==

We will now need to look at the partition editor.

At the beginning, upon boot, do you see something like this:

Blue screen of death.... sort of - Page 3 Bootmenu

If so, can you choose Windows and boot in to it?

I will try to boot to windows and see what happens.

I cannot access windows at all and ubuntu will only run with the disc in. Should I reinstall it?

Try to boot in to Windows installation. Is that possible?

I'm not sure. I will try and see. I have the disc that came with the computer when I bought it. Do I need to use it?

descriptionBlue screen of death.... sort of - Page 3 EmptyRe: Blue screen of death.... sort of

Yes, if it is an Operating System disc.

descriptionBlue screen of death.... sort of - Page 3 EmptyRe: Blue screen of death.... sort of

It is the windows xp disc that came with my machine when it was new.

Sorry in answer to your previous question I cannot boot to windows at all now

I meant to boot to the Windows Installation? Can you boot in to the disk and start the Install of Windows?

descriptionBlue screen of death.... sort of - Page 3 EmptyRe: Blue screen of death.... sort of

Yes I can, but I haven't let it run because I'm unsure what to do.

I tried to use the windows disc but it locks up when it gets to the place where it asks you to install, recovery panel ,or exit. Also when I try to boot with anything other than the ubuntu disc i get this message

GRUB loading
error: no such partition
grub rescue>
It is asking for a cmmand I assume but I dont know what to do.

It does not give you this option:

Blue screen of death.... sort of - Page 3 Bootmenu

Windows listed at the bottom?

descriptionBlue screen of death.... sort of - Page 3 EmptyRe: Blue screen of death.... sort of

more_horiz
I don't see anything listed in your post. just a red x.

descriptionBlue screen of death.... sort of - Page 3 EmptyRe: Blue screen of death.... sort of

more_horiz
No it doesnt give me that option. The only way ubuntu will boot at all is with the disc in the machine.

descriptionBlue screen of death.... sort of - Page 3 EmptyRe: Blue screen of death.... sort of

Windows boots with the disc in but locks up when it gets to the part where it asks to load windows use repair console or exit.

It is time to do a hard drive erase, which will get rid of everything, unfortunately: Download Bootable Disk Creator for DOS version of KillDisk (Free) (USB Flash & Floppy)

Works on a floppy disk and flash drive. Let me know when you have this ready. Then, we can continue with the operation.

Right now, it seems the blue screen of death is about hardware corruption, in which case the setup for Windows will fail, because some hardware on your computer may no longer function. If that is the case, I have a diagnostics kit that I know of that can be used to figure out what hardware is plaguing the setup of Windows.

I will bring a flash drive with me to work tomorrow and get the download. Then i will report back when i have it. Thanks!

Sorry Ive been out of touch. Blew my motor in my truck so I took some time off to fix it. I dont know if it makes any difference, but i can access my windows files thru ubuntu, as long as the ubuntu disc is in. Can we fix anything this way or should i just save the things I want then proceed with the killdisk download?

descriptionBlue screen of death.... sort of - Page 3 EmptyRe: Blue screen of death.... sort of

Is this thing on? LOL Banner

descriptionBlue screen of death.... sort of - Page 3 EmptyRe: Blue screen of death.... sort of

Please save those, and proceed with KillDisk.

descriptionBlue screen of death.... sort of - Page 3 EmptyRe: Blue screen of death.... sort of

I have the kill disk installed on a flash drive and Im ready to proceed

descriptionBlue screen of death.... sort of - Page 3 EmptyRe: Blue screen of death.... sort of

I am sorry. I am missing the flash drive instructions I had. Let me think

OK.

  1. Download Bootable ISO Image of Active@ KillDisk to burn CD.
  2. This downloads an ISO IMAGE (not a regular file) that needs to be burned to the CD AS AN IMAGE (not as an added file).
  3. Use the following ISO burner: http://software.lsoft.net/IsoBurner-Setup.exe

descriptionBlue screen of death.... sort of - Page 3 EmptyRe: Blue screen of death.... sort of

Okay. I have the disc made. Whats next?

descriptionBlue screen of death.... sort of - Page 3 EmptyRe: Blue screen of death.... sort of

more_horiz
Please follow this tutorial to ERASE-ALL-DATA: http://www.killdisk.com/erasedata.htm

==

Then, afterward try to install Windows XP full, once again.

==

If you have any issues with this process, please ask.

After using kiilldisc i tried twice to reinstall windows. It loads up but looks like its always in safe mode. When I adjust properties etc it does not make things smaller. Also it cannot find my internet connection, and I have no sound. I am currently using ubuntu again. I installed it but get the same grub error as before so im running it from the boot disc. I am very confused at this point.

descriptionBlue screen of death.... sort of - Page 3 EmptyRe: Blue screen of death.... sort of

Windows did reinstall?

If so, device drivers will have to be obtained for some drivers.

descriptionBlue screen of death.... sort of - Page 3 EmptyRe: Blue screen of death.... sort of

more_horiz
Yes windows did install. But I cannot get on te internet in windows. It says i have no internet connection or something to that effect. Thats why I'm using ubuntu. It still connects, though i have to run it with the disc in.

descriptionBlue screen of death.... sort of - Page 3 EmptyRe: Blue screen of death.... sort of

I reinstalled windows yet again. i can access the internet now but all the icons tool bars etc are still way too big. I cannot seem to adjust my screen resolution, and trying properties changes nothing. Any suggestions?
