Have you tried updating your Routers firmware to see if that was the problem?

Hello, are you able to use the internet at all or is it just the browsers?

just the browsers - I use Google chat, and an Apple update popped up and downloaded and installed just a couple of hours ago. IE worked for a little while, but Firefox and Chrome quit about 5 days ago and no matter what exceptions I check or firewall settings I have I just can't get any browser to come up. They all say they cannot display the webpage, or something similar. I just did an Ad-Aware scan and caught a pgm called rtumonde, but I doubt that could be causing this horrible problem...

Interesting development - I was looking through my program list and came across a browser I must have d/l a while back - Avant - and it works. Hmmm. The others don't:
IE
Firefox
Opera
Lunascape

Hello.
So one browser works, that helps a bit. Now we've got that, we know the TCPIP stack is working so something is changed with your browsers. I'm guessing a proxy maybe.

Remove the Proxy setting in Internet Explorer and/or in FireFox.

    In Internet Explorer
  1. Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.

    In Firefox
  1. Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection > Choose "No Proxy"
  2. Click the apply button and restart that computer in normal mode.

the settings in IE and Firefox were already set the way you described, so I changed them, and changed them back to no proxy, but still not working. Keep trying! Thanks

Thanks for the bump, your topic slipped through the cracks and got missed.

The main problem here is you are using 64 bit OS. We can try and fix it, but you need to note the following. 64 bit uses a different means of processing. We still have a few things to try, but our tools are limited because most wont work under 64bit.

See here:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-GB/help/41531554-d5ef-4f2c-8fb9-149bdc5c8a701033.mspx

Go to Start, in the little seach box, type in "Run" and let it find the Run command.
Once it has found it, right click and select "Run as administrator".

Now in the run box, copy/paste in the following:

netsh winsock reset

Hit enter, then wait a few seconds, then reboot normally.
Any connection now?

sorry - when I get the run box, it only allows me to put in a command, and if I do try to reset winsock, it bombs out immediately. I know that's probably not something you want to hear, but I don't know what to do anymore - trash my computer?

descriptionunable to connect to any browser pt. 1 EmptyRe: unable to connect to any browser pt. 1

more_horiz
It's probably some incomparability in 64bit. I wouldn't say trash, maybe format as a last option to see if that fixes anything.
