I beg forgiveness if it is inappropriate to addanother post on this topic, but I have tried all of the suggestions found in other member's posts and staff replies, however I can't seem to get through the first step of downloading the HighJackThis tool. All attempts end at the "run" command from each source. I have tried the "sendspace" link, the "DDS" link and the "kelly-korner" link but cannot get the HJT tool to load. It always ends at the run command with no action. I'd liike to get you guys an HJT copy but need help with that step.

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\winlogon.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

Can not download and install HijackThis from the link provided. Install terminates at Trend Micron's "run" command.

Please download Ice Sword from HERE

  1. Download the zip to your desktop and extract it.
  2. Open the Ice Sword folder and then launch IceSword.exe.
  3. Then look in the left hand bottom of the program and press "Registry"
  4. When the registry list opens, drag the line between the two windows so you can see which registry hive you need.
  5. Next, open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, and navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

  6. Now look in the right side pane for two run values that are just random numbers.
  7. Once you have found the value(s), right click it and press "Delete"
  8. Okay the prompt and close IceSword.

Yes, Ice Sword has loaded after renaming winlogon. I have followed IceSword instructions from your previous post but find only one random number which I have deleted.

I'm sorry, renaming HJT to winlogon allows HJT to install to C:\Program Files\Trend micro\ HighJackThis but it will not run from there.

Alright lets try this, if it doesn't let you run it as well, rename it to winlogon.exe:

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

I'm a little freaked at the moment. While waiting for your last reply, my system inadvertantly rebooted and when my desktop re-loaded the virus seemed to be gone. No text residing as my wallpaper any longer and no pop-ups. I am now able to run HJT and have included the log file below. Should I still follow your instructions to load Anti-malware?

Hello.
Looks like MBAM didn't get all of it.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdra64.exe,
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Please update the MBAM database so you have the latest, then run a new scan.

1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

* Tools->Options->Main tab
* Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

system security virus CF_download_FF

system security virus CF_download_rename

3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
5. Close any open browsers.
6. We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.

  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouse click combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Been away from this for a few days and virus has returned. Renaming ComboFix allowed application to be saved but would still not run under Combo-fix.exe. (file is infected states "system security"). Could not disable AVG as it too cannot be opened. I am now back to a state of not being able to run HJT or mbam.

Renaming IceSword to winlogon did not work. Virus tells me winlogon.exe is infected and it will not launch.

Please download SysProt AntiRootkit v1.0.1.0 by Swatkat

  • Next run the file; *Note: If running vista right click and select run as administrator
  • Once opened, navigate to the log tab and select all the areas including the hidden objects only box and click on the create log button
  • A scan will start and then a window will pop up with two options, select scan all drives
  • Once finished it will give you a location where it was saved, navigate to that place usually the desktop, and open the log, post all the contents of the log back here.

I have accessed your recent post from my wife's laptop. I can no longer run any programs nor access the internet with my problem desktop computer. Upon boot, as Windows is loading, I see a series of dialogue boxes (containg command prompt screens) pop up. Once those have disappeared and Windows has loaded I am unable to run anything. Every program launch attempt, including Internet Explorer results in a command prompt dialogue box claiming "program is too big for existing memory". I have tried booting in safe mode and still get same messages. Some Windows tools will still function, but none that seems useful, and still no application functionality.

Try this:

Please download this file: Avira Rescue Disc

  1. Insert a black CD into your CD draw.
  2. Double click the rescuecd.exe file on your Desktop.
  3. Hit the "Burn CD" button and allow it to burn, it shouldn't take too long.
  4. Next, reboot your computer, keep the CD inside the draw.
  5. Your computer should boot from the CD and boot to the Avira rescue disc.
  6. Next, see this guide here: How to use the boot disc
