My computer opened "Windows Security Center" and it keeps popping up all these virus names and trojans and it will only let me "enable protection". It says that I should install antivirus on my computer, but when I click install nothing happens. Did I just do more damage or is Windows Security Center legit?? I'm so confused. I can't get my desktop open or anything! I read something about using Hijack This..but I'm pretty sure I don't have that on my computer. I have no clue what to do. I can't logon to my system at all, or start in safe mode. But the desktop picture still shows and my screen saver still works. Goofy I'm using my husband's laptop to try to get some help. Thanks for your time!

So if you can't login, then how are you getting these popups? LMBO or ROFL

Can you download Hijack This here?

It won't let me login to the system so I can't get to my desktop or internet or anything else. When the computer comes on it shows my desktop picture and that's it. Then the "windows security center" pops up along with the virus warnings. I can't go to any websites to download anything. I'm using my husband's laptop to get on this message board. I don't know if I'd be able to download it to a disk on the laptop and put it on my desktop computer? It doesn't seem to be doing much of anything, I can't imagine it would let me load something onto it.

Okay, can you open the Task Manager via ctrl/alt/del when you get to your Desktop background?

Ok, back on my husband's computer. Here's the thing. I downloaded hijack this. And I ran it and it gave me a list of stuff and I tried to copy and paste, but my computer will only allow me to get so far before it freezes up again. I keep getting a "data execution prevention" message. With the task manager open I click on end task for the data prevention program and that seems to be the only way I can actually get anything done, but then after a few minutes the computer freezes up again. I have AVG and Spybot Search & Destroy on my computer. IF I'm able to run them completely, do you think they'll erase the problem? I started running AVG and right away it popped up some type of Trojan. I can't remember the full name of it, but it had BHO in it. Oh yeah! And 3 "lovely" porn site short cuts have been added to my desktop just as an added kick in the face from these beautiful people that love to destroy strangers computers!! Grrr. Malware/Virus creators!!! UGH!!!

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

Ok, I did the Hijack This stuff that you said. And then downloaded the mbam, but when I try to run it I get a pop up saying that the computer can't find that program. I downloaded it twice and it's right there in my downloads list, but supposedly the computer can't find it and won't run it. The same thing happened yesterday when I tried to run my Spybot Search and Destroy. It wouldn't run. Can that be fixed? Sad tearing

Must be a Rootkit, lets remove it shall we:

1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

* Tools->Options->Main tab
* Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

Apparently Malware has taken over for me too? Help! CF_download_FF

Apparently Malware has taken over for me too? Help! CF_download_rename

3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
5. Close any open browsers.
6. We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.

  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouse click combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

OH! FOREVERMORE!! I ran Comb-Fix and got a pop up that said "It's not safe to continue!!" And told me to download it again and try again. It said "You may be infected by a filing patch virus 'Virut'. " ???

descriptionApparently Malware has taken over for me too? Help! EmptyRe: Apparently Malware has taken over for me too? Help!

more_horiz
I'm afraid I have bad news.

Your system is infected with a polymorphic file infector called Virut. Virut is capable of infecting all the machine's executable files (.exe) and screensaver files (.scr). However, the problem is that the virus has a number of bugs in its code, and as a result, it may misinfect a proportion of executable files and therefore, the files are corrupted beyond repair. As of now, security experts suggest that a format and clean install, or destructive recovery if you have an OEM recovery partition, is the best way to clean the infection and it is the best and safest way to return the machine to its normal working state.

Backup all your documents and important items (personal data, work documents, etc) only. DO NOT backup any executable files (softwares) and screensavers (*.scr). It attempts to infect any accessed .exe or .scr files by appending itself to the executable.

Also, avoid backing up compressed files (zip/cab/rar) files that have .exe or .scr files inside them. Virut can penetrate and infect .exe files inside compressed files too.

Recent variants also modify htm, html, asp and php files.

Do not back up to another machine, as it may become compromised. Burn to DVD/CD, or to an external drive which has nothing else on it, and which you can format should it happen to become infected from the backups.

For more information, please see Here

Instructions how to format and reinstall Windows can be found Here

Aw crap. Ok, well how can I tell if I have one of those OEM recovery partitions? If I had one of those would that mean that I wouldn't need the Windows XP disk to fix the problem? I've been searching for it and I can't find it. Goofy Go figure. And everything else has been going SO well! I know the guy who put this computer together for us did some fancy stuff with it, but I REALLY don't want to ask him for help because he tends to put a bunch of crap on that we don't want or need.

descriptionApparently Malware has taken over for me too? Help! EmptyRe: Apparently Malware has taken over for me too? Help!

You'd notice if you had the OEM recovery, like when booting, it would give you other options, or you had another partition you couldn't access in My Computer.
