Hi all - I loaned my Dell Vostro laptop (Windows XP) to a friend and it is hooped now. AVG tells
me it has the crypto virus (I scanned the C: drive in SafeMode and it says it removed certain files
to the vault, but the laptop is still experiening many problems, especially with the Explorer and Firefox
browsers). I have the HijackThis log. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Also chopped was my explanation of what I did.

1) Ran the "Fix checked" stuff recommended (excluding the cserve.uleth.ca bit, which is the network I am temporarily connected to).

2) Could not download ComboFix.exe as the [save file] download option in Firefox was ghosted out. Instead downloaded it on a different computer (saving it as Combo-Fix.exe) and then FTPed it to the laptop.

3) Ran it and it warned me to stop AVG. I did and clicked OK. It then said "AVG still running - continuing at your peril..." or something like that. I guess I did not stop it properly (can't really see an option to disable it).

4) Warned that I was not running Recovery Console and prompted me to install it for me. I said "No" (I had already spent an hour trying to install that thing on XP SP3 and all attempts failed). I don't really care if the laptop becomes unbootable anyway, as I will just rebuild it from scratch if that happens (I might do that anyway).

5) Combo-Fix did some stuff, rebooted the laptop and once again prompted me to install Recovery Console for me (this time I said "OK" (what the hell) but it didn't seem to do anything. It just went right into its many stages and then produced the logfile I pasted here).

Thanks!

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

File::
C:\66947ff7cd4a0d94ed5ee4f50dba08

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:
Cryptor virus problems Sfxdaw

This will open combofix again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run.
It may want to reboot after it's done. (It will warn you if it wants to)
Post the resulting log back here.

Did another quickscan and came up clean. Thanks so much, origin. Will make a donation to the Geekpolice Fund next week!

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

This will also reset your restore points.

How is the machine running now?

Uh-oh. After the second clean sweep with Malwarebytes, I thought we were done and started cleaning up a bit. I deleted all of the ComboFix stuff while I was at it (and then emptied the Trash). Is that going to be a problem?

descriptionCryptor virus problems EmptyRe: Cryptor virus problems

And the machine is running very nice now. All of the browsers are working fine, it is not hanging for 30 minutes when Windows is coming up, it's not running hot (temperature-wise - it was cooking yesterday), the antivirus programs are running smoothly, etc.

Presently I am running TrendMicros "Housecall" program just as an extra pre-caution.

No its alright if you deleted ComboFix its alright since that tool is very powerful and should not be used without supervison 😉

3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.
To turn on System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (To turn on System Restore), and then click OK.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.
The link can be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin

OK Origin - the [system restore] has been reset as per your instructions. I also installed the spywareblaster and did some of the other things on the list you provided (with regards to ActiveX, etc). All windows critical updates had been done already.

The problem is, I am now going to loan this computer back to my friend who lives 1000 km away. She is pretty good with computers, but I don't want to bog her down with too many permissions/blocking issues. I will recommend she surf with Firefox instead of Explorer and I have set the antivirus, spyware and windows updates to happen automatically.

But if she does ship it back to me all bogged down (usually takes her kid about 2 years to totally clobber the machines I send her!), I will be sure to make a nice donation to your fund if you assist me again. Thanks for everything!

- Ned

PS The primary reason I deleted the ComboFix stuff is that I didn't want her to accidentally run it.
